Marine Offences Procedure Act 2006

The Marine Police, Marine & Ports officers and Fisheries Inspectors are now in a position to issue tickets for persons committing marine offences as a result of the introduction of the Marine Offences Procedure Act 2006. This is a procedural change in the prosecution of marine offences which brings it in line with the long standing method of dealing with traffic offences.

At 1:40pm on Monday, Police attended a reported burglary at a Railway Trail, Devonshire residence. On arrival officers spoke with the complainant who stated that sometime between 8:30am and 12:45pm that day, an unknown culprit or culprits gained entry while he was away from the home. The culprit(s) stole a Sony Wega flat screen TV. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
Cup Match Press Conference

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) wishes to take this opportunity to issue a number of advisories to the public to ensure a peaceful and safe time during this year’s Cup Match holiday period. This is traditionally a busy time from a policing perspective and as such we will launch an initiative to increase Police patrols for the five days between Wednesday August 2nd and Sunday August 6th.

Around 3:50am on Sunday, Police received a report of an assault near Horseshoe Bay beach in Southampton.

The Marine Police would like to remind the boating public that over the Cup Match weekend there is likely to be very heavy marine traffic and caution should be exercised. In particular operators of vessels are requested to observe the 5 knot speed limit within 100 metres of the shoreline and ensure they are not creating a large wake.
Witness Appeal

Currently two men are in custody assisting Police with their investigation into the shooting death of 18 year old Jason Lightbourne. However, the Bermuda Police Service continues to appeal for witnesses to the incident, particularly anyone who may have been in the Ord Road/Sylvan Dell Road, Paget area between 3:30am and 4:30am on Sunday, July 23, 2006 to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 299-4315 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1-800-623-8477.
Robbery

At 2:50pm on Thursday, Police received a report of a robbery on Burnaby Street in the City of Hamilton. The victim, a 42 year old Pembroke man, stated that around 1am that day he walked from a Front Street establishment to Burnaby Street, where his motorcycle was parked. When he reached the motorcycle, he put his helmet on the seat and bent down to tie his shoe.
Injury RTC

Around 10:25pm on Wednesday, Police attended a reported single vehicle road traffic collision resulting in injury on Khyber Pass in Warwick, near the junction with Khyber Heights Road. It appears that the car, a white Toyota Corolla, was traveling south on Khyber Pass when the driver, a 27 year old Warwick woman, lost control and collided with a wall. The Warwick woman sustained a broken left wrist and a laceration to her lip.
Commissioner’s Response to Mr. Victor Alleyne’s Article in Today’s Royal Gazette

The method used in the identification parade after the assault on Mr. Victor ‘Rudy’ Alleyne is regrettable. I recognize that witnesses must be protected and their identity kept confidential and it is to that end that we are in the process of equipping a purpose built identification suite where victims and suspects will be kept apart and not able to interact with each other, in keeping with best practices both here and elsewhere.

At 8:30pm on Tuesday, Police attended KEMH following a reported assault near the junction of Store Lane and Roberts Avenue in Devonshire. On arrival officers spoke with the victim, an 18 year old Devonshire man. He stated that earlier he was on Friswells Hill in Devonshire with other individuals when two young men approached him brandishing bladed articles.
