Bermuda Police Service 135th Anniversary Celebrations

Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva - 2014 marks a significant milestone in Bermuda as this year the Bermuda Police Service will celebrate 135 continuous years of service to our community.

We are excited and honoured that we get an opportunity to share this milestone with the public that we serve.

Traditionally during Police Week we have a number of activities that highlight policing and our partnerships within the community.

CCTV Expansion Project Update

Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva - After an unfortunate slow start to the CCTV expansion project, I can report today that significant progress has now been made.

As a first step, the service provider is restoring service to the priority areas that were covered prior to 1st April. That work is substantially complete, with a handful of cameras left to install over the next few days.

Weekend Police Activity

Over the weekend, police officers arrested eight people on suspicion of impaired driving as the Selective Traffic Enforcement Programme (STEP) continues.

Officers also arrested nine people for outstanding warrants and conducted liquor license checks at various liquor licensed premises throughout the island.

Update on House Fire

The Palmetto Road was opened to vehicular traffic in the early hours of this morning and the Bermuda Fire Service have released the scene. They will reassess the damage with a structural engineer on Monday to determine if the structure is safe for the occupants to return. There were four people in the housing complex; all escaped without injury except a 54 year old woman who received relatively minor first degree burns to her arms and face prior to exiting the home.

Flight Diverted to Bermuda Without Incident

At 4:53am Friday 11th April 2014, a Caribbean Airline Flight BW425 travelling from JFK in route to Trinidad with 106 passengers and crew onboard was rerouted to Bermuda as a result of the smell of electrical burning in the cabin. The plane landed incident free. No injuries were reported. The airport terminal was opened to accommodate all 106 passengers and crew. The plane has been grounded and the passengers are presently on island awaiting passage to their final destination.

Reported Assault on Court Street

Police responded to a report of an assault that took place a few minutes before 12am on Monday night. The victim a 34 year old Devonshire man was leaving a liquor licensed premises on Court Street when a 27 year old female with whom he had a prior disagreement along with some other individuals confronted him. The woman purportedly shouted expletives at the victim and commenced throwing punches at him.

Arrests for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol

On Saturday April 5th at 10:08pm, police were stationery at the junction of Montpelier Road and Middle Road in Devonshire, when their attention was drawn to a car that was travelling east along Middle Road. The car was being driven in a manner that raised the suspicions of the officers resulting in the officers following the vehicle on to Happy Valley Road. The vehicle stopped and the driver was asked to get out of the vehicle. Once out of the car, the man was unsteady on his feet and exhibited overt signs of impairment.

Appeal for Witnesses to Collision & Attempted Robbery

Shortly after 12 noon Thursday April 3rd, 2014 police responded to a traffic collision which occurred along East Broadway near Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute. As a result of the accident a 23 year old Pembroke man riding a blue Yamaha motorbike received injuries. Police are interested in speaking to the driver of a black Nissan Tiida motorcar involved in the collision. Police are also appealing for any witnesses who may have any information relating to this collision to contact PC Teara Douglas of the Hamilton Police Station on 247-1685 or 247-1704.

Residents Encouraged to Attend Upcoming Community Clinics

Residents of Smith’s parish, Devonshire and Pembroke will have the opportunity to meet and interact with their Community Action Team (CAT) officers at two upcoming events.

A ‘Meet Your CAT Officer’ Police Community Clinic organised by the Central Community Action Team will take place this Saturday, 5th April from 2-5pm at Terceira’s Gas Station.

Update: Reported Serious Motorcycle Collision in Pembroke

At last check the 28 year old Hamilton parish man injured in a reported single vehicle motorcycle collision that took place near the junction with Pitts Bay Road and Turnstile Lane in Pembroke around 11pm Friday, March 28th was recovering in stable condition on a general ward at the hospital.
