Two Men Hurt in Smith's Parish Stabbing Incident

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding an incident which left a 56-year-old male and a 38-year-old male, both in need of treatment at hospital for stab wounds.
The incident occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. today, Tuesday, 14th June, 2022, in the area of John Smith’s Bay, Smith’s Parish.
Upon arrival, officers found the 58-year-old in an unresponsive state.
Both men were attended to at the scene by medical personnel before being transported via ambulance to King Edward Hospital where, at last check, they were both attended for their injuries, which are not considered life threatening.
Reports are the men were involved in a road traffic collision shortly before they became involved in an altercation.
The roadway near John Smith’s Bay was cordoned off for approximately an hour and a half and traffic diverted, while the scene was forensically processed.
Police are asking anyone with information on this matter to please call 211, or the main police number 295-0011. Alternatively, you may also share the information with an officer you know.

Chief Inspector Alexander Rollin, Community Policing Division – “With the National Heroes’ Day holiday weekend upon us, the public can look forward to a host of carnival type activity starting Thursday, 16th June 2022 and ending on National Heroes’ Day, Monday, 20th June 2022.
Of particular note are two events scheduled for the holiday Monday: J’ouvert, which takes place between the hours of 3:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., followed by Revel de Road.
For J’ouvert, revellers will depart from Bernard’s Park and proceed left on Marsh Folly Road, left onto Cedar Avenue then another left onto Angle Street finishing back at Bernard’s Park.
The Corporation of Hamilton and the Ministry of Public Works have issued traffic notices permitting the closure of the roads mentioned, during the event.
Next up will be Revel de Road.
This street procession starts at 11:00 a.m. Monday 20th June and will consist of three laps, which will mainly take place in Pembroke Parish. This will mean the closure of a number of roadways. Among them, Frog Lane, Parsons Road, North Street and Dutton Avenue during the first lap.
The second lap will result in the closure of Dutton Avenue, Marsh Folly Road, Black Watch Pass, and North Shore Road up to the Palmetto Road roundabout.
The third and final lap will begin at the North Shore Road/Palmetto Road roundabout, west on Palmetto Road, then on to Marsh Folly Road before turning left onto Dutton Avenue and finishing at Bernard’s Park.
It is anticipated that each lap of the procession will take approximately two hours to complete.
Motorists should expect delays and there will be traffic diversions as a result of road closures and large numbers of people expected to be in attendance. We ask that you exercise patience and caution.
The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) will maintain high visibility during these events. We urge members of the public against engaging in criminal activity or anti-social behaviour during these events or, any of the numerous other social gatherings set to take place during the holiday weekend.
It should be noted that although the scheduled carnival events have obtained noise permits, the BPS will still monitor noise levels and use authority under the law to address any noise related complaints, if necessary.
Members of the public planning to attend any of these events should travel with a group or in pairs, avoid parking or walking in dimly lit or isolated areas and advise someone of their whereabouts and when they plan to return.
For those headed out on the water, please file a float plan. Do not go boating alone. Ensure your radio is working and all the requisite safety equipment on-board is up-to-date.
When swimming, do not swim alone and please ensure that your boat’s registration decal is current and prominently displayed.
Do not consume alcohol and drive, ride or operate a watercraft.
Extra police officers will be on duty on the water for the raft up that is scheduled to take place in Mangrove Bay on Saturday 18th June. Our officers will be working closely with the Coast Guard to ensure a safe and enjoyable day is had by all.
We also ask that you cooperate with our officers, as we aim to ensure minimal disruption and that everyone is able to enjoy the holiday, without fear for their safety and wellbeing.
The public can expect there will be stepped up patrols as we continue our focus on traffic offences with Operation Vega, including impaired driving.

Inquiries Underway After Man Hospitalised With Stab Wounds

Approximately 2:50am Saturday, 11th June 2022, police officers responded to a report of a fight that occurred in the area of Court Street and Elliot Street, Pembroke involving a number of persons.
Subsequently, a male in his 30s is now being treated at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for multiple stab wounds, apparently resulting from the incident.

Sudden Death of 70-Year-Old Man [Updated]

Around 3:10pm on Saturday 11th June 2022, police and other first responders attended a report of an unresponsive 70 year old male, located at a Victoria Street, City of Hamilton residence.
On arrival, it was ascertained that there were no signs of life present and death was pronounced at the scene by an attending physician.
The scene was forensically processed by police and an investigation has commenced. An autopsy is anticipated in due course to determine cause of death, however foul play is not suspected at this time.
The Bermuda Police Service is aware of social media posts circulating regarding the deceased. Anyone who may have information regarding the deceased, in particular his movements prior to his death, is encouraged to call police on 211.
No further information will be given until the next of kin have been notified.
Update: Wednesday, 15th June - Having received certain information, the Bermuda Police Service has begun an investigation into the death of a 70-year-old male, whose lifeless body was found at a Victoria Street, City of Hamilton residence on Saturday, 11th June, 2022.
Detective Inspector Jason Smith said, “An autopsy is set to take place as part of this investigation into this matter.
We wish to thank those members of the public who have provided us with information.
However, we are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed two males involved in an altercation near the Ex-Artillery Club on Victoria Street, City of Hamilton between the hours of 8:00 p.m. Friday, 10th June, and 3:00 a.m. on Saturday 11th June, 2022, to please get in contact with us.”

Sudden Death of 47-Year-Old Robert A. Vaughan

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 47-year-old Robert A. Vaughan and extends sincere condolences to his family and friends.
It appears that around 2pm Tuesday, 7th June 2022 Mr. Vaughan, a local elevator technician, was working inside a 10th floor room at Seon Place, Front Street, City of Hamilton when he fell off a ladder, striking his head.
Despite lifesaving efforts as he was rushed unconscious to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance, Mr. Vaughan was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police officers then attended Seon Place to conduct initial inquiries, along with a Government Occupational Safety & Health official.
The investigation regarding this fatal industrial incident is ongoing.
An autopsy is anticipated, but foul play is not suspected.
Reported Two Vehicle Collision in Southampton

Around 3:50pm on Monday 6th June 2022, police and other first responders were dispatched to a report of a two vehicle collision on Middle Road, near the junction with Peppercorn Lane in Southampton.
Initial reports suggest that a 72 year-old woman was traveling west along Middle Road when she lost control of her vehicle and crossed into the east bound lane, striking a residential wall. As a result, the wall collapsed with debris falling onto another car which was traveling east.
The woman was transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries, the extent of which is not known at this time.
Police are currently on scene diverting traffic, using a single lane system. Traffic delays should be expected. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes, until the vehicles and major debris have been cleared from the road.
Reported Single Vehicle Car Crash In Devonshire [Updated]

Around 9:30am Saturday, 4th June 2022, a reported single vehicle car crash occurred along Middle Road, Devonshire in the vicinity of Fort Hill Road.
Details are limited at this time. However, it appears that the car involved struck a wall.
Traffic diversions are currently in effect at Montpelier Road and Orange Valley Road until further notice, while the scene is processed.
Any witnesses are encouraged to call 211.
Update: Traffic diversions are no longer in effect at Montpelier Road and Orange Valley Road in Devonshire.
Inquiries continue regarding the circumstances of this morning’s reported single vehicle car crash in the Middle Road, Fort Hill Road Devonshire area.
The driver is believed to have sustained head and neck injuries. An update on their medical condition is anticipated in due course.

Update: Monday, 6th June - It now appears that the car involved was being driven west along Middle Road, Devonshire around 9:30am Saturday, 4th June 2022 when it struck a wall near the junction with Fort Hill Road.
The driver, said to be a 40-year-old Devonshire man, had to be assisted out of the vehicle by Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service personnel as well as ambulance personnel.
He was transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance and apparently received treatment for head, neck and chest pain, before being discharged later that day.
Inquiries continue and witnesses or members of the public with any information are still encouraged to call 211.
Renewed Scam Advisory: Alleged U.S. $800,000 Prize From ‘Samsung’

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) is once again advising members of the public that if you receive a message from unknown persons suggesting that you have won a large sum of money, it is more than likely a fraud and should be ignored.
A variation of a classic scam currently circulating claims U.S. $800,000 in prize money from ‘Samsung’ has been won.
More recently, in an effort to further validate the scam, the fraudsters have managed to convince a Bermudian male to post a misleading video on social media stating that the prize draw is legitimate. In addition, the fraudsters are informing recipients that they must keep their ‘winnings’ secret.
The BPS is aware of one elderly local man who has been involved in the fraudulent scheme for over 12 months and has so far sent $65,000 in cash and iTunes cards, before reporting the matter to police. It is suspected that overseas fraudsters have swindled more local residents.
How it Works
The recipients are usually contacted via WhatsApp and informed that they are the winner of an $800,000 prize draw. Of note, more often than not, the WhatsApp contact number has a +234 prefix telephone code, which means that the senders originate in Nigeria.
The recipients are then shown a briefcase containing cash via video and are assured that a representative is currently on-island to deliver the cash to the recipients.
However, prior to delivering the cash, the recipients are directed to purchase numerous Apple iTunes cards locally, in order to satisfy delivery fees.
Once purchased, the recipients are instructed to reveal the unique number located at the back of every iTunes card and send a photograph of each number via WhatsApp back to the senders.
The fraudsters (senders) then quickly redeem the value of the cards before the recipient realises that they are being scammed.
Advice
• Report any suspected scam you may be involved in to the BPS non-emergency number at 211 or via e-mail to 211@bps.bm. Provide as much information as you can.
• If any credit / debit cards or other account details have been provided, contact your local bank as soon as possible.
• No legitimate organisation demands payment of any fees via the purchase of iTunes cards.
• Block all WhatsApp contact from calls originating out of Nigeria, or any other unknown contact. Here is WhatsApp’s guide on how to block calls and messages.

Proactive Policing Results in Loaded Firearm & Quantity of Drugs Seized

Detective Superintendent Nicholas Pedro (Crime Division) – “At 10pm on Thursday 26th May, 2022, uniform officers were conducting lawful road checks in the vicinity of Horseshoe Bay, Southampton.
They had cause to stop a private car containing a 40-year-old male and a 29-year-old female. A search of their vehicle uncovered a loaded firearm and a quantity of suspected controlled drugs, assessed to be a sufficient amount for supply.
Both persons were arrested and detained at Hamilton Police Station.
A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Carrying or possessing a firearm carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 12- 17 years in prison on conviction in the Supreme Court, and a term of imprisonment of up to seven years on conviction in the Magistrates’ Court, for a first time offender.
Possessing a firearm in Bermuda is a serious matter and anyone found in possession of a firearm will very likely go to prison.
We take matters relating to guns very seriously, and will use the latest forensic and evidential techniques available to catch and convict persons possessing and using firearms.
Please be warned that our officers are actively tasked with catching persons involved in this activity, and we will take steps to ensure that the full force of the law is utilized to achieve this.

Single Vehicle Car Crash in Devonshire: Woman Driver Injured [Updated]

Around 12:00pm on Sunday 29th May, police officers on patrol, came across a single vehicle collision on Middle Road, Devonshire in the area of the U.S. Consulate General.
Initial information suggests that a woman driving a private motorcar was travelling in an easterly direction, when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a utility pole.
The woman, who is believed to be the only occupant in the vehicle, was transported to King Edward Memorial Hospital via ambulance, for treatment of head and neck injuries.
Traffic is currently being diverted at Montpelier Road and Flora Duffy Hill, while police process the scene.

Update: Monday, 30th May - The driver of a car hurt when the vehicle struck a utility pole on Middle Road in Devonshire near the junction with Montpelier Road around 12 noon Sunday, 29th May 2022, said to be a 37-year-old Pembroke woman, was treated at the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
She was later arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and released on police bail, pending further inquiries.
Traffic was diverted for approximately two hours while the scene was processed. Any witnesses are once again asked to call Constable Tashun Simons on 211 or e-mail tsimons2@bps.bm.
