Zywonde Lema, a person of interest to the Bermuda Police Service, was arrested earlier today.
We wish to thank members of the public for their assistance in locating Mr. Lema.
The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) is once again appealing to the public to not circulate unfounded rumours and misinformation, since this serves no purpose other than to create discomfort and cause alarm in our community.
The BPS is aware of a voice note and accompanying image suggesting officers are engaged in a firearms incident involving a soldier at the Royal Bermuda Regiment, Warwick Camp Headquarters.
We wish to make it clear there is no truth to these claims.
The Bermuda Police Service, (BPS), wishes to assure the public that in light of recent acts of violence and in an effort to avert any reprisals, there will be a heightened police presence throughout the island over the coming days.
Chief Inspector, Alex Rollin of the Community Policing Division said, “With Halloween being this coming Sunday, the BPS is mindful there are persons within our community who may use this as an opportunity to commit unlawful acts. Such behaviour will not be tolerated and officers will use all lawful powers to deter and detect anti-social behaviour.
Although the Bermuda Police Service is well positioned to deal with Halloween from an enforcement perspective, our focus is also on public safety – and we appeal to the community to do their part to preserve the safety and security of everyone.
Given the current COVID restrictions, we anticipate that Halloween celebrations will be somewhat muted.
That notwithstanding, there is expected to be the traditional trick or treating and as such, we urge motorists to slow down to help keep the roads calmer, particularly when traveling through neighbourhoods. There will be more pedestrians on the roads – many of whom will be children dressed in dark coloured costumes. We don’t want a tragedy to occur.
We encourage older children, parents, friends and family to do their part in keeping their young children close by and safe. We also ask that persons walking along the main roads with young children wear brightly coloured clothing as well as reflective items and strongly encourage the use of flashlights during the hours of darkness.
Individuals attending Halloween parties are asked to act in a responsible manner. Carefully consider your options and the consequences. If you intend on consuming alcohol – please, do not make the mistake of driving whilst impaired. Poor choices can have long term ramifications.”
The Chief Inspector warned, “Avoid activities which may cause injury to persons and/or damage to property. Such acts include but are not limited to throwing eggs and other projectiles. We ask that parents, shopkeepers and gas station owners/operators be wary of persons, particularly those young in age, who attempt to purchase unusually large quantities of eggs.
Throwing eggs at people or property may seem like innocent fun – but this irresponsible and potentially dangerous act can cause personal injury and property damage. Therefore, anyone caught engaging in such activity will be dealt with appropriately.
In closing, the Bermuda Police Service would like to wish those participating in Halloween related activities a safe and enjoyable Halloween.”
The Bermuda Police Service (BPS), can confirm a firearms warrant was executed at a Euclid Avenue, Pembroke, residence at approximately 6:20 p.m., on Thursday 28th October, in connection with an ongoing investigation.
No firearms were recovered, however a suspect was taken into custody for questioning.
We apologise to area residents for the inconvenience caused during this exercise and thank you for your patience and understanding.
Acting Assistant Commissioner (Crime) Nicholas Pedro – “The Bermuda Police Service stands with other jurisdictions around the world in supporting and celebrating Anti-Money Laundering Day on 29th October.
Money laundering presents many dangers, especially to Bermuda, an island centre that derives so many benefits from the international financial markets, insurance & reinsurance.
Money laundering increases the threat of monetary instability, due to the misallocation of resources; undermines financial markets; it creates economic distortion and instability, and ultimately results in loss of revenue.
As the primary law enforcement agency in Bermuda, we remain 100% committed to a robust anti-money laundering & terrorist financing regime, and supporting all our partners in this effort.”
The BPS has become concerned with the recent uptick in serious injury collision over the course of the last week and includes a fatality last evening. Addressing the situation, Chief Inspector, Robert Cardwell, who heads up the Bermuda Police Service Tactical Support Unit, stated, “Time and time again, our investigations reveal that bad decision making including driving whilst impaired by alcohol or drug and inattention as the primary causes behind these collisions.
Impaired driving is heavily frowned upon in the community. It is inevitable as we have seen, that impaired driving will lead to a collision of some kind. Knowingly driving whilst impaired with the heightened risk of taking a life or causing a permanent life changing injury to someone, is incomprehensible.
Driving whilst impaired puts you and everyone else at risk. The pubic are reminded that consuming alcohol – any amount whilst also under the influence of prescribed or over the counter medication such as cold and flu medicine, can elevate levels of impairment. If you are out and are consuming alcohol have an exit plan.
The following can negatively impact your ability to operate a vehicle.

The vehicles were headed in opposite directions when they collided.
The car in headed wast flipped onto the passenger side, with the driver, a 30-year-old male trapped underneath.
He was attended to at the scene by EMS staff for injuries which were described as life threatening and subsequently transported via ambulance to King Edward VII Hospital, in an unresponsive state.
The female driver of the other car which was headed west complained of chest pains. Though not considered life-threatening, the full extent of her injuries remain unknown at this time.

What we know at this stage is that 2 gunman on a black motor cycle attended the Robin Hood Public House both were wearing black helmets and dark pants, the rider wore a dark top and passenger a light coloured top. I repeat a black motor cycle with 2 persons the rider in dark pants and top, with the passenger in dark pants and light top both with black helmets.
The passenger has gone into the premises and shot a number of times at the patrons. Ayinde ran from the premises out into the rear car park where the second gunman and rider of the cycle was waiting. Ayinde was shot a number of times by the second gunman riding the black motor cycle. Both gunmen have left on the cycle and are believed to have travel out of the city via Band room Lane and onto Glebe Road shortly after 6.00pm.
The investigation at this stage is that this is a gang related attack which has was carefully planned and carried out. Over 20 rounds of ammunition were discharged in the attack by both gunman. The third victim was associated to the deceased remains in hospital and the fourth was an off duty police officer enjoying the football with friends who was treated for gunshot wounds to his hands and discharged.
The appeal today is for people with dash cams, home CCTV and video door bells to have a look at your footage from 5 pm to 7 pm last night and if you see anything to get in touch – these gunman had to set up and ready themselves somewhere in our community and had to drive back somewhere. We have a web portal set up to assist anyone with footage to get it to us – please login on at; https://portal.police.bm/robinhood."

There were several individuals inside the pub and restaurant at the time of the incident and the investigators are interested in speaking with anyone with information no matter how insignificant they may think it to be.
Acting Commissioner of Police Darrin Simons condemned this senseless act of violence, “This heinous act carried out by individuals who it would seem have no regard for life or even the safety and wellbeing of others for that matter, has left our community shaken. This is not who we are as Bermudians. The public can expect to see increased policing around reassurance patrols in direct response to this incident. This is being addressed at the highest level in terms of our response and commitment of resources around that. There were rumours circulating that a police officer was killed in this attack.
