Police Week 2013: Commissioner for a Day Winners

On Wednesday, October 9th as part of Police Week 2013, nine students from various schools were ‘Commissioners for a Day’ after submitting winning entries to the annual creative artwork and short essay competition held by the Bermuda Police Service. The competition was open to all public and private primary, middle and senior schools across the island. This year’s Police Week theme is ‘Building Community Confidence Through Engagement.’

Update: Reported Serious Collision in Paget

At last check the 29 year old Pembroke man seriously injured when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a rental cycle around 8:20pm Tuesday, October 8th on South Road in Paget remains in the Intensive Care Unit with internal injuries. The rider of the rental cycle, a 52 year old Warwick woman, suffered a broken wrist. Police are still appealing for the rider of a second motorcycle that was travelling west with the 29 year old Pembroke man at the time of the collision to contact police, as that rider is an important witness in this investigation.

Reported Serious Collision Tonight

Police responded to a report of a road traffic collision that took place on South Road in Paget just 200 meters west of The Coral Beach entrance at 8:20pm (Tuesday evening). It appears that two cycles were traveling west on South Road when it appears that one of the cycles hit a livery cycle traveling in the other direction, resulting in one of the riders losing control and crashing his cycle. The man was taken to the hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Female Police Officer Assaulted & Injured

Inspector David Geraghty - Around 10:30am on Tuesday, October 8th police officers responded to an incident on Anchorage View Road in St. George’s. On arrival officers spoke to a 56 year old male in relation to the incident. The male became belligerent and violent, assaulting one of the officers before making good his escape. The female officer is currently being treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for injuries that she received to her head as a result, which are not believed to be life threatening.

Ongoing Advisory: Residential Burglaries

The Bermuda Police Service continues to encourage residents, particularly in the central parishes as well as Warwick, to be vigilant after several reported daytime burglaries in those areas recently. A quantity of jewellery and electronic items were stolen in the latest incidents. Members of the public should report any suspicious activity occurring in their neighbourhoods to police directly on 295-0011.

Over the weekend, police officers arrested seven people for outstanding warrants and conducted liquor license checks at various liquor licensed premises throughout the island.

Sudden Death of Arthur Botelho

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 56 year old Arthur Botelho. Mr. Botelho was found in a compromised state in the Barry Road, St. George’s area around 3pm Saturday, October 5th and subsequently pronounced dead at the scene by an on call doctor. A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to Mr. Botelho’s family to assist them at this difficult time. An investigation into this sudden death is ongoing; however foul play is not suspected.

Once again the Bermuda Police Service Financial Crime Unit would like to remind members of the public to remain vigilant regarding phishing e-mails and other scams that attempt to obtain personal information or other sensitive data.
In particular, local residents are advised to be wary of a scam e-mail currently circulating allegedly from the ‘USAID AND DFID LOTTERY.’
The fraudulent e-mail goes on to request personal details, suggesting the recipient has been awarded a cash prize:
