High Speed Chase/Injury RTC

Around 10pm on Friday, Police were on mobile patrol in the area of Collectors Hill in Devonshire when officers observed a car exit Collectors Hill and come to a complete stop at the junction of Collectors Hill and South Road. The vehicle then started to drive away as the Police car activated its lights and siren; however, it stopped again, seeming to comply with the officers’ request. As officers got out of the Police vehicle and approached the car the driver, a 32 year old Smith’s parish man, sped off heading west on South Road. The car continued traveling west on South Road at a high rate of speed, causing other traffic to take evasive action. The car then passed Demco Florist, where Police motorcycle officers were located. One of the motorcycle officers took up pursuit of the fleeing car, following it to the Botanical Gardens area where it came to a sudden stop next to another car, which was traveling in the opposite direction. As a result, the Police motorcyclist was unable to stop in time and collided into both cars. The Smith’s parish man then drove off again but collided with another motorcycle, pushing the male rider and his cycle several meters before crashing into a wall. The Smith’s parish man then exited the car and attempted to make good his escape; but he was subsequently apprehended by Police in a nearby yard. The 32 year old was arrested, taken to Hamilton Police Station and detained after refusing to take the alco-analyser test. The Police motorcyclist was treated for minor injuries at KEMH and released. The rider of the other motorcycle was treated at the hospital for a minor head wound and road rash and released. The driver and passenger of the other car involved were not injured; however, their vehicle was extensively damaged. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact Sergeant Stephen Gunn on 515-0995.
