The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and make sure any children traveling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Those traveling on motorcycles should always fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, July 19th – Monday, July 26th 2010 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 30
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 36
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 7
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 18
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: Devonshire = 1, Pembroke = 11, Paget = 2, Warwick = 1, Southampton = 1 and Sandys parish = 2.

Most of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles, with 1 car also reported stolen during the period. Of the 18 vehicles reported stolen, 2 were subsequently recovered, including the car.

Police Apprehend Escaped Prisoner Alvone Maybury

Around 1:20pm today, Police apprehended escaped prisoner 24 year old Alvone Maybury in The Glebe Road/Secret Lane, Pembroke area. Mr. Maybury was taken into custody without incident along with another young man and a young woman who were found with him at the time. A court appearance for Mr. Maybury is anticipated in due course. The Bermuda Police Service would like to thank the members of the joint Police & Corrections special task force who worked tirelessly to recapture Mr. Maybury. Acting Detective Chief Inspector Robert Cardwell, who headed up the joint special task force, indicated that the strong partnership between the Bermuda Police Service & the Department of Corrections in particular, along with some assistance from the public, resulted in the peaceful conclusion of this matter.

Burglary

Around 4:30pm on Monday, Police received a report of a burglary at a Verdmont Road, Smith’s parish residence. It appears that sometime between 8:45am and 4:10pm that day, an unknown culprit or culprits gained entry into the home while it was unoccupied. The culprit(s) stole a quantity of cash & jewelry. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the public to remain vigilant regarding burglaries. All residents should make sure windows and doors are locked before leaving their homes unattended, even for short periods of time. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities or individuals in their neighbourhoods to Police on 295-0011.
