The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and make sure any children traveling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Those traveling on motorcycles should always fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, April 19th – Monday, April 26th 2010 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 22
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 33
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 3
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 8
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: Smith’s parish = 1, Pembroke = 4, Warwick = 1 and Sandys parish = 2.

All of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles. Of the 8 vehicles reported stolen, none were subsequently recovered.

Handbag Snatch

Around 11:30pm on Monday, Police received a report of a handbag snatch. The complainants, who are visitors to the island, stated that they were riding their rental cycle in the South Road/Trimingham Road, Paget area when they came to a stop and two unknown men on a motorcycle rode alongside them. The suspects took a knapsack from the rental cycle’s basket and made good their escape. The 53 year old man and his female companion, a 47 year old woman, were not injured. The knapsack contained a quantity of cash and personal items. The suspects were described as two men wearing dark coloured clothing and dark coloured helmets with dark coloured visors riding a dark coloured motorcycle. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.

Assault/Robbery

At 12:40pm on Monday, Police observed an assault/robbery in progress in the Fentons Drive/Parsons Road, Pembroke area. At that time it appeared that two men were assaulting and robbing a third man of his jewelry. The victim, a 19 year old Devonshire man, received abrasions to his face, neck and arms. He attended KEMH for treatment of his injuries and was later released. One of the suspects, a 17 year old Pembroke man, was apprehended following a foot pursuit and violent struggle. Some of the jewelry taken was subsequently recovered. The second suspect is described as 5’7” tall of slim build wearing dark coloured jeans and a grey T-shirt. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.
