Road Victim Identified - The Bermuda Police Service would like to thank those members of the public who have come forward regarding the fatal road traffic collision that occurred around 1:15am Saturday on North Shore Road in Devonshire near the Mid Atlantic Boat Club involving a car and a pedestrian.
The victim has now been identified as a 41 year old Southampton man. No further information will be released at this time until his next of kin have been notified.
The driver of the car, a 27 year old Hamilton parish man, was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving/causing death by dangerous driving; however, he subsequently passed the alco-analyser test and has been released on Police bail. Witness Appeal – Serious Assault
Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to a serious assault that occurred around 12 noon Saturday on Middle Road in Southampton in the vicinity of Traditions Restaurant. Police are interested in speaking with any motorists traveling through the area around the time of the incident who may have seen an altercation between two or three men in the bus lay by opposite Traditions Restaurant. Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the Western Criminal Investigation Unit on 234-1010.
Assault
Around 1pm on Thursday, April 15th Police received a report of an assault on Woodlawn Road in Sandys parish near the junction with Middle Road. It appears that the victim, a 19 year old Devonshire man, was attacked by two or three young men with a blunt object. He was also punched and kicked about the body. The victim was taken to KEMH with what appeared to be relatively minor injuries; however he has since been moved to the Intensive Care Unit. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to contact PC Gregory Battersbee on 295-0011.
Weekend Activity
Over the weekend there were 3 reported burglaries, 10 reported damage only road traffic collisions, 6 reported road traffic collisions resulting in injury and 1 vehicle reported taken without its owner’s consent.
There were also 15 people arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. Of the 15 individuals arrested, 2 individuals passed the alco-analyser test and 2 refused to take it. In addition, of those individuals that failed the alco-analyser test, two had more than four times the legal limit of alcohol in their blood. The legal limit is 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood; they registered 337mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood and 344mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood respectively.
With summer approaching, the Bermuda Police Service will be paying particular attention to the offence of impaired driving. Road safety remains a high priority and Police will focus on enforcement as well as working with our community partners regarding education to change the behaviour. The Bermuda Police Service continues to urge the motoring public to be responsible by not drinking & driving. If you must drink, please use a designated driver or alternate transportation (bus, taxi etc.).
