High Speed Chase/Officers Injured - Around 9:45pm on Saturday, Police were on mobile patrol in the Middle Road, Warwick area when they observed a man on a motorcycle travel from Khyber Pass on to Middle Road heading east without stopping at the posted stop sign at the junction of Khyber Pass and Middle Road. As a result, the officers caused the motorcyclist to stop on Middle Road in Paget near Four Ways Inn. It appears that while attempting to speak with the motorcycle rider about the traffic offence he accelerated away, heading west on Middle Road. As he fled the scene, the motorcyclist struck two male Police officers standing in the road as they signaled for him to stop, knocking one to the ground. Police pursued the motorcycle rider and when they caught up with the offender, he resisted arrest. A deterrent spray was used to subdue him. The suspect, a 21 year old Warwick man, was eventually taken into custody and detained at Hamilton Police Station where he received aftercare for the temporary effects of the deterrent spray. The extent of the two officers’ injuries is unknown. Inquiries into this incident are underway and a court appearance is anticipated in the near future.
Fire
Around 3:05am on Saturday, Police received a report of a fire at a Somerset Road, Sandys parish residence. On arrival a short time later, officers observed the lower apartment of the premises ablaze. The Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service also attended the scene and extinguished the fire. Two men who were in the residence at the time of the fire, a 95 year old Sandys parish man and a 21 year old Pembroke man, managed to get out of the burning building. Both men were assessed by EMTs at the scene. The 95 year old Sandys parish man was apparently uninjured and declined hospital treatment, while the 21 year old Pembroke man received first aid at the scene and was taken to KEMH via ambulance for further treatment. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
Injury RTC/Impaired Driving/Officer Injured
At 2:35am on Saturday, Police were on mobile patrol in the Water Street, St. George’s area when they observed a collision involving a taxi. It appears that while attempting to speak with the taxi driver about the incident he accelerated away, striking a female Police officer standing in the road as he fled the scene. The taxi sped away from the pursuing officers heading out of St. George’s; however the taxi driver lost control of the vehicle on Stone Crusher Corner, causing it to overturn. The driver and sole occupant, a 27 year old Hamilton parish man, received a shoulder injury as well as cuts to his body. He was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment of his injuries which are not considered life threatening. The taxi driver was subsequently arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. The female Police officer was also taken to KEMH for treatment of bruising as well as soreness to her left hip and leg. She was later released. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
