We encourage the public to join with us and our community partners in celebrating 133 years of service to Bermuda.

Condolences on the Untimely Death of Major Chris Wheddon

Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva - On behalf of my senior colleagues and all officers and staff of the Bermuda Police Service, I offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Major Chris Wheddon. Major Wheddon joined the Bermuda Police Service in February 1997 and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2003. He served a portion of his career in our Information and Management Services (IMS) department, working on computer systems. He ended his service as a police officer in March 2005 and joined the Bermuda Regiment on a full time basis.

Tropical Storm Leslie Recap - The Bermuda Police Service would like to thank the public for their cooperation during Tropical Storm Leslie. There were no reports of any significant damage, injury or crime.

Weekend Police Activity

Over the weekend, police officers arrested 18 people for outstanding warrants. Officers also arrested one person on suspicion of impaired driving and conducted liquor license checks at various liquor licensed premises throughout the island.

Section 110A: White Hill, Sandys Parish Area

Acting Chief Inspector Robert Cardwell, Western Area Commander - Good morning, I am today announcing that the Bermuda Police Service will once again exercise powers under the Criminal Code Amendment Act 2010, Section 110 and specifically the power to disperse groups. The initial duration of this authority shall be between 8am on Saturday, 8th September until 11:59pm on Friday, 21st September, 2012.

Under the powers under this section of law officers have been authorized to exercise these powers in the general area known as White Hill in Sandys Parish to curb the anti-social behavior that is exhibited in this community. More specifically this will be in the areas of:

Middle Road between Spring Benny Road and Farmstead Lane; Spring Benny Lane, Spring Benny Drive, Spring Benny Road, White Hill View, Rockywold Drive, Rockywold Road, Butterfield Lane, Woodlawn Road, Fairhaven Lane, White Hill Lane, Farmstead Lane and any public place contiguous to any of these roads.

A map clearly indicating the areas this community can expect the police to be exercising these powers will be published in both newspapers together with the notice tomorrow.

Ninth Annual Hurricane Fabian Memorial

Today at 2pm, the ninth anniversary of Hurricane Fabian and the four lives lost during the storm was commemorated at the Memorial Bench in Kindley Field Park, St. George’s. The Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva, Deputy Commissioner Mike Jackman and Assistant Commissioner Antoine Daniels along with various colleagues and friends, gathered in tribute to mark the occasion.

Following a brief acknowledgement of the tragic circumstances and a moment of silence, the lives of those lost were fondly remembered with flowers thrown into the ocean. [Commissioner DeSilva & Station Duty Officer Linda Mienzer pay their respects]

Prior to today’s event the Ninth Annual Remembrance Ride took place on Sunday, September 2nd, honouring the three police employees and a civilian who lost their lives. The Commissioner of Police was also in attendance at that event, as well as Assistant Commissioner Paul Wright, Superintendent Martin Weekes, former Commissioner of Police Senator Jonathan Smith (President of the September 5th Foundation), Inspector Craig Morfitt (Vice President of the September 5th Foundation) and former police constable Jeff Baron (Director of the September 5th Foundation), who joined the victims’ colleagues, family and friends for the event. Investigation into Shooting at North Shore Sports Club - Around 11pm on Tuesday, September 4th police responded to a report of gunshots at a North Shore Road, Devonshire sports club. It now appears that a lone suspect attended the premises and discharged a firearm. A 29 year old male was treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for superficial injuries and later released. There were no other injuries reported.

Weekend Police Activity - Over the Labour Day holiday weekend, police officers arrested 27 people for outstanding warrants. Officers also arrested four people on suspicion of impaired driving and conducted liquor license checks at various liquor licensed premises throughout the island.

Robbery - Around 2am on Sunday, September 2nd police responded to a reported robbery in the Middle Road, Southampton area. It appears that the victim, a 20 year old Southampton man, was riding his motorcycle in the area when he was accosted by two unknown men on another motorcycle. One of the suspects brandished what appeared to be a firearm and took the Southampton man’s motorcycle before both suspects made good their escape via motorcycle. The victim was not injured.

Investigation Ongoing Into Woody’s Incident

All four persons arrested in connection with the Saturday, August 25th incident at Woody’s have been released on police bail pending further inquiries. No weapon has been recovered, and there has been limited assistance from the public so far. However, investigations are ongoing as we continue to build the evidence and process the forensic evidence gleaned.

The Bermuda Police Service continues to appeal for anyone with any information regarding this matter to contact the independent & confidential Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-8477 or the Serious Crime Unit on 247-1739.

Update: Reported Serious Three Vehicle Collision in Warwick - Around 10:20pm on Thursday, August 30th police and first responders attended a reported serious three vehicle collision on Middle Road in Warwick near the junction with Longford Road. It now appears that a jeep and two motorcycles were involved in the collision.

The driver of the jeep, a 59 year old Warwick woman and the rider of one of the motorcycles, a 49 year old Hamilton parish man, have been treated for their injuries at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and released. The rider of the second motorcycle, a 52 year old Southampton man, remains in hospital and at last check was in stable condition.
