Sudden Death of 63-Year-Old Malcolm Stovell Jr.

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) can now confirm the death of 63-year-old Malcolm Stovell Jr. and extends sincere condolences to his family and friends.
Shortly before 6pm Sunday, 28th August 2022, police responded to a report of a lifeless body washed ashore on a beach, near Astwood Walk in Warwick, later identified as Mr. Stovell.
The 63-year-old, understood to be a Warwick resident, is believed to have been swimming in the ocean shortly before the discovery of his body.
The investigation surrounding the circumstances of Mr. Stovell’s sudden death continues.
The BPS is renewing the appeal for anyone who may have been in the Astwood Walk, Warwick area – in particular, the beach area known as “100 Steps Beach” – around 6pm Sunday, 28th August, to call 211 or e-mail 211@bps.bm as soon as possible.

Shortly before 6pm on Sunday, 28th August, police responded to a report of a lifeless body washed ashore on a beach, near Astwood Walk in Warwick.
The victim, a 63 yr-old male, is believed to have been swimming in the area shortly before the discovery of his body.
Police cordoned off the area whilst the scene was being processed. An investigation surrounding the circumstances of his death has begun. An autopsy is anticipated, to determine the exact cause of death.
The Bermuda Police Service is appealing to anyone who may have been in the area, in particular, the beach area known as “100 Steps Beach” to call 211.
No further information will be given until the next of kin have been notified.

Sudden Death of Death Of Kerry Lee Horrer

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 40-year-old Kerry Lee Horrer, an American visitor.
Mr. Horrer’s lifeless body was discovered in the vicinity of the Victualing Yard, in Dockyard, by members of the public on Monday 22nd of August, 2022.
An investigation surrounding the circumstances of Mr. Horrer’s death continues, however an autopsy has revealed that foul play is not suspected.
The Bermuda Police Service extends its sincerest condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Kerry Lee Horrer at this difficult time.
Sudden Death of 57 Yr-Old Judy Severe

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 57 Yr-Old Ms. Judy Severe.
Ms. Severe was one of several visiting cruise ship passengers at the Horseshoe Bay Beach on Saturday, the 21st of August, 2022.
It was reported that Ms. Severe and others from her group were out snorkeling in shallow waters, when Lifeguards observed that she had not moved from her position for a period of time and decided to check in on her. On doing so, they discovered that she was unresponsive. Lifeguards pulled her body ashore, where lifesaving efforts were attempted by lifeguards and two off-duty nurses, prior to the arrival of emergency services. However, she was pronounced dead on arrival at King Edward Memorial Hospital.
An autopsy has revealed that the cause of death was due to drowning.
The Bermuda Police Service extends its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Judy Severe during this difficult time.

Sadly, sometimes there is still a narrative of disrespectful, and sometimes hateful, comments that cause feelings of fear and isolation.
This is not right. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect; even if we differ.
The BPS is committed to serving, respecting, and protecting each of our community members and I take this opportunity to reaffirm that their police service will be there when they have need."

"The LGBTQ+ Community is growing in Bermuda and the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) must ensure that our staff understand and practice the BPS Code of Ethics and Core Values in the areas of Diversity, Equality and Fairness.
In the BPS Strategic and Operational Plan 2021 -2026 under ‘Work in Partnership’ a key deliverable is to 'develop our links with faith-based communities and other hard to reach groups (e.g. LGBTQ+)’.
• I am leading on this item, supported by a team of officers and the Occupational Health Unit.
• The BPS will create a safe space supportive of a professional environment for all LGBTQ+ staff within the BPS.
• We welcome colleagues from all backgrounds to support and to actively aspire to represent all of our communities through intersectionality.

40 Yr-Old Man Found Dead in Dockyard

Shortly before 11pm on Monday 22nd August, police and other first responders attended a report of an unresponsive male being found in the vicinity of the Victualing Yard in Dockyard.
On arrival, EMT’s attended to a 40 year-old male, however it was determined that there were no signs of life present and death was certified at the scene by an attending physician.
An investigation surrounding the circumstances of the man’s death has commenced. No further information will be given until the next of kin has been notified.
Police are appealing to anyone who may have been in the Dockyard area and noticed anything unusual between 6pm and 11pm, to contact Inspector Clifford Roberts on 717-0590 or 211.
Sudden Death: Horseshoe Bay Beach, Warwick

Shortly after 3pm on Saturday 20th of August, Police and other first responders were dispatched to a report of a medical emergency at the Horseshoe Bay Beach in Warwick.
Upon police arrival, it was ascertained that at 57-Yr-Old female visitor, had been pulled from shallow waters by on duty lifeguards, in an unresponsive state.
Despite lifesaving efforts commenced at the scene, she was subsequently pronounced dead on arrival at King Edward Memorial Hospital.
An autopsy is anticipated to determine the cause of death.No further information will be provided until the next of kin has been informed.
Renewed Witness Appeal:Jason Mello Murder Investigation

Detectives are renewing their appeal for information in connection with the murder of Jason MELLO. Jason MELLO was fatally shot on Friday 19th August 2016, six years ago whilst on Bandroom Lane, Pembroke.
The gunman is believed to have entered Bandroom Lane, wearing a full face visor helmet and heavy dark coloured winter clothing that would have been unusual on a hot August evening.
The gunman is believed to parked the cycle higher up on Bandroom Lane, and walked down to where he shot Mr. MELLO several times.
The gunman then returned to his parked motorcycle and rode back out through St. Monica’s Road area.

5 Arrested, Cash, Drugs & Ammunition Seized during Simultaneous Multiple Search Warrants

On Thursday, 11th August 2022, The Bermuda Police Service conducted Operation ALGEDI that saw the simultaneous execution of multiple searches involving over 70 police officers. The BPS Financial Crime
Unit, assisted by the Serious Crime Department, Drugs Unit, Tactical Division and the Community Policing Division, executed 18 search warrants across several properties in Bermuda. Following the Proceeds OfCrime Act search warrants, some live ammunition, drugs, believed to be cocaine, and more than $300,000.00 in cash were seized.A quantity of high value goods believed to be acquired from the proceeds of crime were also seizedFive persons were arrested in relation to this Operation. No police officer, politician or customs officer was arrested.
Detective Chief Inspector Sherwin Joseph of the Specialists Investigations Department stated: "Money Laundering and the associated predicate offenses cause significant harm to our community and the financial reputation of Bermuda. The investigation is at a critical juncture, and no further information will be provided at this time"
Decision Made to Dismiss Officer Following Special Case Hearing

Commissioner of Police Darrin Simons said earlier today, "A Special Case Hearing [Hearing] was held in accordance with Police [Conduct] Orders 2016.This Hearing was held because of matters arising out of a gross misconduct matter involving the former Police Constable.
Following the Hearing, a decision was reached today resulting in the former Police Constable’s immediate dismissal without notice."
The Commissioner further stated, "The former officer was a significant witness to a serious crime, and then denied being present. The facts later came to light and after an internal employment process, the officer was dismissed for the dishonesty."
"The Bermuda Police Service maintains Standards of Professional Behaviour that officers are expected to uphold. It was determined that this officer’s behaviour fell well below that standard and was dismissed without notice.“The officer has a right of appeal and as such it would not be appropriate to release further information."
