Police Acknowledge Recent Supreme Court Sentencings

Detective Chief Inspector Na’imah Astwood (Serious Crime Department) – The Supreme Court of Bermuda recently delivered lengthy prison sentences for defendants convicted of murder, possession/use of a firearm and aggravated burglary in three separate cases.

On Wednesday (October 4th) Garriko Benjamin was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for using a firearm in the double murder of Haile Outerbridge and Ricco Furbert that occurred on 23rd January 2013.

Also Wednesday, Detre Ford and Wakeem Philpott were sentenced to 12 years and 10 years imprisonment respectively for aggravated burglary and possession of a firearm for an offence that occurred on 1st July 2016 at a residence in St. George’s.

And on Thursday (October 5th) Keivon Scott was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for the murder of Edmund John Flood that occurred at a Paget residence on 2nd October 2016.

The Bermuda Police Service recognises the professionalism of the detectives, forensic officers, intelligence analysts and support units who worked to bring these matters to fruition – as well as the prosecutors in the Office of the Department of Public Prosecutions who worked tirelessly to bring all the evidence together for successful prosecution of the perpetrators.

We also take this opportunity to thank all members of the public who had the courage to come forward and give evidence.

These results should reinforce public confidence in the police, DPP and the criminal justice system and encourage citizens to come forward with information to assist detectives in other challenging investigations.

Anyone with any information regarding unsolved murders or the location of firearms is asked to contact the Serious Crime Department in confidence on 247-1739.

Alternatively, please call the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477.

All incidents are under investigation. Police are appealing to members of the public who have witnessed these incidents or may have information pertaining to them to contact their respective Police Station, Police Headquarters at 295-0011 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1 (800) 623-8477.
