Safety Tips for Halloween

With Halloween next Monday, the Bermuda Police Service would like to remind the public of the following safety tips.

Tips for Children:

Carry a flashlight.

Always walk, never run across the street.

Stay in familiar neighbourhoods and never go into a stranger’s house or car.

Before crossing a street take off your mask or hood so that you can see where you are going.

Stay on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk when possible.

Walk on the right side of the road facing the traffic if there is no sidewalk.

Obey all traffic and pedestrian signs and signals.

Never cut across dark yards or driveways.

Only go to houses that have lights on.

Stay away from animals you don’t know.

Do not eat your treats until they have been inspected by an adult.

Tips for Parents:

If you purchase or make a costume ensure that the material is flame-retardant.

Consider adding reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.

Secure emergency identification (name, address, phone number) discreetly within Halloween attire or on a bracelet.

Insist that your children eat dinner before setting out.

Warn your children not to eat their treats until they get home and you have personally inspected them.

Look at the wrapping carefully and toss out anything that looks suspicious.

Explain the differences between pranks and vandalism (good and bad behaviour) at Halloween time - i.e. throwing eggs.

Know the routes your children will be taking and what time they should be home.

Your children should know how & where to reach you and when to be home.

Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult.

All incidents are under investigation. Police are appealing to members of the public who have witnessed these incidents or may have information pertaining to them to contact their respective Police Station, Police Headquarters at 295-0011 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1 (800) 623-8477.
