Advisory: Online Job Scams

Once again the Bermuda Police Service Financial Crime Unit would like to remind members of the public to remain vigilant regarding phishing e-mails and other scams that attempt to obtain personal information or other sensitive data.

In particular, local residents are advised to be wary of a scam e-mail currently circulating with the heading:

“BERMUDA JOB OFFER . BMD 600 & BMD 4,500 / MONTH
GENERAL EMPLOYMENT OFFER (2012).”

This alleged part time job opportunity, reportedly from a  major manufacturer and distributor, asks for personal and banking details claiming:

“Our customers … will SEND PAYMENTS to your ACCOUNT, we will then give instructions on how to remit the funds to our office location or clients ... using Western Union Money Transfer which can be processed from bank or any Western Union Location. Customers will make payments in Bermudian Dollar or USD (Which your bank may convert to your local currency) and you will instantly deduct BMD 600 as commission on every payment and also get a Monthly Payment of BMD 4,500. You may receive about 1 - 2 payments weekly.”

Such requests via unsolicited correspondence should be ignored. In addition, residents should ignore ‘official looking’ e-mails claiming to be from any local bank regarding their ‘security information.’ Please be aware that banks or other legitimate financial institutions will never ask you for personal account information such as your password.

Members of the public can contact the Financial Crime Unit on 247-1757 or report suspected internet fraud via e-mail to fraud2@bps.bm.

All incidents are under investigation. Police are appealing to members of the public who have witnessed these incidents or may have information pertaining to them to contact their respective Police Station, Police Headquarters at 295-0011 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1 (800) 623-8477.
