Superintendent Antoine Daniels - On behalf of the Bermuda Police Service, I wish to begin by expressing sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of 31 year old Pembroke resident Joshua Robinson, who tragically lost his life on Saturday evening.
As previously reported, at about 5:15pm on Saturday (June 23rd) Joshua Robinson was shot a number of times, while inside Jason’s Barber Shop, located on North Shore Road in Pembroke.
He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later by an on call medical physician.
Police immediately secured the crime scene and commenced a murder investigation which is being led by Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro.
The murder of Mr. Robinson represents the 2nd death caused by use of a firearm in Bermuda this year (2012), while an additional 3 persons have also been shot and injured.
Although these numbers represent a decrease in firearms incidents overall, this weekend’s shooting demonstrates the negative impact a single incident has on the community as a whole, especially when we consider Mr. Robinson was a young man who was in the prime of his life, a father, son, brother and friend.
As I am sure Chief Inspector Pedro will allude to and provide more specifics in his press statement, we are again appealing to members of the public to assist us in resolving this crime by reporting any information whether they believe it to be important or not to the police or via the Crime Stoppers hotline.
We in the Bermuda Police Service recognize that often there are increased levels of concern/anxiety within the community when senseless acts like the shooting on Saturday occur, especially when you couple this with the regularity of these firearms incidents since 2009. (There have been 74 people shot since the first Quarter of 2009, with 18 fatalities).
However, we remain committed to identifying the persons responsible for carrying out these senseless & violent acts and will continue our robust approach to targeting guns, gangs and anti-social behaviour.
I now hand over to Chief Inspector Pedro for him to provide an update on the investigation.
Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro - May I start by offering my sincere condolences to the family & friends of Mr. Robinson on behalf of the investigating team and the wider Bermuda Police Service.
At 5:15pm on Saturday 23rd June, 2012, police officers responded to 911 reports of shots having been fired inside Jason’s Barber Shop, located at #107 North Shore Road, Pembroke.
A 31 year old man whom I can now identify as Mr. Joshua Robinson, of Pembroke Parish, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene.
Mr. Robinson leaves behind numerous members of family and friends. A forensic autopsy has been conducted by an overseas doctor, and the full report is expected shortly.
A full complement of detectives from the Bermuda Police Service Serious Crime Unit is investigating this incident, and it is being considered as ‘Premeditated Murder’.
Detectives have spoken with witnesses that were inside the shop at the time of the murder, and also with persons in the immediate area.
However, we are still very much interested in speaking with people that may have seen anything of note in the area of the shooting either before, at, or after the actual time of the shooting.
The suspects are believed to be wearing dark coloured clothing with dark coloured helmets and tinted visors. They were seen to be riding a step through motorcycle which was either silver or dark coloured.
The murder enquiry is being headed by Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro, and members of the Serious Crime Unit can be contacted directly on 247-1340 / 247-1739 or the main police number 295-0011. Alternatively, persons can also contact the confidential & independent Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477 (TIPS). Any and all information received will be treated in the strictest of confidence. |
