Arrests In Connection With Shooting Murder & Attempted Murder

Assistant Commissioner of Police David Mirfield - Detective Inspector Peter Charlemagne who is the Senior Investigating Officer will update you on the facts.

I am now in a position to name the young man who tragically died last night following this shooting as:

Stefan Burgess who was 24 years of age and lived in the parish of Pembroke.

On behalf of the Commissioner, the Bermuda Police Service extends its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. The second victim remains in hospital where his condition is described as ‘stable’.

This is the first gun murder for 8 months, firearms offences in general have reduced considerably, having said that I know how things can spiral very quickly, there has been a marked increase in gun violence over the past month, and once again there is a tit for tat element to it. As a result of that we have put more officers both armed and unarmed on the streets, and we will continue to use all lawful opportunities to suppress gang activity. While I cannot say with certainty that this was a gang related shooting, the likelihood is that gang affiliations could have played a part. We are not treating this as a random attack and believe that the address and/or the occupants were targeted. We remain open minded on the potential motive.

Detective Inspector Peter Charlemagne - May I start by offering my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Burgess on behalf of the investigating team and that of the Bermuda Police Service.

At 9:00pm on Sunday January 8, 2012, police officers responded to 911 reports of two persons having been shot at #60 The Glebe Road, Pembroke parish.

A 24 year old man whom I can now identify as Mr. Stefan Burgess, of Pembroke parish, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and subsequently succumbed to his injuries at the King Edward Memorial Hospital. Mr. Burgess leaves behind a girlfriend, an infant child, and numerous members of family and friends. A forensic autopsy is planned for tomorrow (Tuesday January 10, 2012).

Another 24 year old male from Devonshire parish received a gunshot wound and is being treated at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. His injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

A full complement of Detectives from the Bermuda Police Serious Crime Unit is investigating this incident, and it is being considered as ‘Premeditated Murder’ of Mr. Burgess and ‘Attempted Murder’ of the twenty four year old male from Devonshire.

The scene is still being kept under police guard at this time and Forensic Crime Scene examiners & Detectives continue their examination of the scene for evidence to help further this investigation. Detectives are also speaking with witnesses.

Following receipt of certain information this morning and subsequent arrest operations – I can confirm that one man was arrested on Suspicion of Murder and the other arrested for Conspiracy to Commit Murder and are currently in custody. One male is aged 25 and the other is aged 39 years old.

The enquiry team is anxious to speak with anyone in The Glebe Road, St. Monica’s Road and North Shore Road, Pembroke area that may have seen a person or persons on a motorcycle and also on foot in these areas between 8:30pm and 9:15pm on the evening of Sunday January 8, 2012.

The suspects are believed to be wearing dark coloured clothing with dark helmets and tinted visors.

The Serious Crime Unit can be contacted directly on 247-1079 or the main police number 295-0011. Alternatively, persons can also contact the confidential and independent Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477 (TIPS).

All incidents are under investigation.
