Today at 2pm the 8th anniversary of Hurricane Fabian and the four lives lost during the storm was commemorated. In tribute, a small group gathered at the Memorial Bench at Kindley Field Park to mark the occasion. Following a moment of silence, the lives of those lost were fondly remembered before yellow flowers were thrown into the ocean.
At 2pm on Sunday, 4th September the 8th Annual Remembrance Ride took place, also honouring the four lives lost during Hurricane Fabian. Acting Commissioner of Police Mike Jackman, former Commissioner of Police Senator Jonathan Smith (President of the September 5th Foundation), Inspector Craig Morfitt (Vice President of the September 5th Foundation) and former police constable Jeff Baron (Director of the September 5th Foundation) were all on hand along with many members of the public.
On 5th September 2003 three police employees and a civilian were swept from the Causeway by Hurricane Fabian. They were Constable Stephen Symons, Constable Nicole O’Connor, Station Duty Officer Gladys Saunders and Corporation of Hamilton employee Manuel Pacheco. A motorcycle ride has been coordinated each year since on the Sunday closest to the anniversary.
