About 6:30 p.m. on Friday 5th November 2010, a Thomson Airways flight from Manchester, England to the Dominican Republic with 278 passengers and nine crew onboard, diverted to Bermuda as a result of a disruptive female passenger. The passenger was said to have been involved in a loud argument with her husband and later became abusive to other passengers and crew who were trying to calm her down. Efforts were made to restrain her, during which she is alleged to have assaulted a crew member. She was eventually restrained by crew and passengers for the remainder of the flight.
On arrival of the plane at L. F. Wade International Airport, police officers went onboard and arrested the 45 year old female who was still acting in a disorderly manner and using profanity. She was arrested under the provisions of the Aviation Security & Piracy (Overseas Territories) Order 2000 and detained at Southside Police Station. Over the weekend she was interviewed by detectives from the Southside Police Station and a file prepared for review by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
On the advice of the DPP, the matter was referred to the Police in the U. K. and arrangements were made to repatriate the prisoner. She was flown out of the island on Monday afternoon, 8th November on a commercial flight via the U. S. A. under the escort of two Bermuda Police Service officers. They arrived in Manchester this morning and she was immediately taken into custody by Manchester police officers who have now taken over the investigation. The Bermuda Police Service will continue to provide all necessary support to the Manchester Police in their investigation. |
