Police Week 2010 - Commissioner for a Day

The Bermuda Police Service welcomed the seven winners of the Police Week 2010 creative artwork and short essay competition to Police Headquarters in Prospect today. From 9am to 2pm the winning students took part in various Police related activities, giving them an idea of what it would be like to be Commissioner of Police for a day.

After approximately 100 entries from the island’s primary schools, the seven students were selected by a committee based on their age appropriate artwork and or short essays on this year’s theme ‘Bridge to the Future.’

The seven Commissioners for the day initially met with Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva, Deputy Commissioner Mike Jackman, Assistant Commissioner Paul Wright and Assistant Commissioner David Mirfield in the Bermuda Police Service boardroom at Police Headquarters before ‘heading out on patrol.’

Their tour included the following Police departments/units:

  • Marine Unit
  • Command Centre (i.e. COMOPS/CCTV)
  • Roads Policing Unit
  • Police Media Relations Unit
  • Community Action Team
  • K9 Unit

The seven also had lunch with Commissioner DeSilva and his senior officers in the Officers’ Mess. All received certificates for their outstanding entries and will be our special guests at the Beat the Retreat tonight at 8pm in St. George’s.

The winning students are:

  • 6 year old Benjamin Floyd – Warwick Academy Primary School
  • 8 year old Malay Robinson – West End Primary School
  • 8 year old Izrael Pearman – Prospect Primary School
  • 9 year old Delasia Williams – Dalton E. Tucker Primary School
  • 9 year old Sydney West – Victor Scott Primary School
  • 9 year old Sarai Tucker-Outerbridge – Harrington Sound Primary School
  • 10 year old Kristian Singh - Purvis Primary School

All incidents are under investigation. Police are appealing to members of the public who have witnessed these incidents or may have information pertaining to them to contact their respective Police Station, Police Headquarters at 295-0011 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1 (800) 623-8477.
