This weekend was a particularly busy one for the Bermuda Police Service Marine Unit, which received numerous calls of vessels either taking on water or breaking their moorings due to the stormy weather over the last few days. One incident of note involved a 60ft. sailing vessel which broke its moorings in Ely’s Harbour and drifted ashore. A Police Marine Unit vessel attended; was able to free the sailboat and re-secure it to another nearby mooring.
The Police Marine Unit would like to advise all boat owners of the following during the winter months. Hopefully these simple, proactive tips can help reduce the number of similar incidents and can also prevent the loss of property.
- Vessels should be checked on a regular basis.
- Battery systems should be kept in good condition and fully charged to ensure proper operation of bilge pumps.
- Any valuable items or gear should be removed from the vessel.
- Moorings and bridles should be checked to ensure integrity and security of the attached vessel during winter storms and gales.
- Ensure vessels are properly secured BEFORE any inclement weather. DO NOT do this during a storm putting yourself and others at risk.
- If the owner is off the island someone responsible should be left in charge of checking the vessel whilst the owner is away.
- Ensure the owner’s contact information is up to date with the Department of Marine & Ports, including any change in contact numbers.
- Consider hauling the boat out of the water during the winter season if possible.
The Bermuda Police Service Marine Unit would like to wish everyone a happy and safe 2010 boating season. |
