28 year old Stephen Thompson of Pembroke was arrested at the L. F. Wade International Airport at 10:40pm on Tuesday, December 22nd 2009 after returning to Bermuda – one year since he fled the jurisdiction while a defendant in a December 2008 Supreme Court wounding trial. Thompson was accused of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to taxi owner and operator Neville Andre Greene following an April 2008 incident where Mr. Greene received a knife wound to his neck in a dispute over money. In his absence the Pembroke man was found guilty by a jury and sentenced to 7 years imprisonment by Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves, who described Thompson as “a very dangerous man.”
The arrest was a result of co-operation between H.M. Customs & Immigration officials and the Bermuda Police Service. Officers from both organizations were waiting for the fugitive after receiving information he was to return to the island Tuesday night aboard the American Airlines flight from New York. Thompson was processed by H.M. Customs & Immigration officials and immediately taken into custody by Police officers from the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit. He was transferred to the Westgate Correctional Facility today to begin serving his 7 year sentence. |
