Response to Article in Royal Gazette Regarding Uighurs

On Wednesday, July 8th 2009 the Commissioner of Police George Jackson, was asked by the Royal Gazette, “Would we be prepared to add anything to Sir Richard's comments about the security review of the four Uighurs? Can you say where you are seeking the information from and why you've been unable to obtain it so far?”

The Commissioner’s response was:

“As is our age old practice, we do not comment on “any issues” that the Governor has already addressed formally or otherwise. I have read His Excellency’s comments that were attached to the e-mail that you have distributed and his comments stand as the official representation for the Bermuda Police Service.”

The Thursday July 9th edition of the Royal Gazette stated that the Police Commissioner “declined to comment.” The Royal Gazette was misleading in stating that the Police Commissioner declined to comment as he did give an explanation as to why he cannot speak in depth on the topic. Using the phrase “declined to comment” infers there was no attempt to address the issue and indeed that was not the case.

All incidents are under investigation. Police are appealing to members of the public who have witnessed these incidents or may have information pertaining to them to contact their respective Police Station, Police Headquarters at 295-0011 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1 (800) 623-8477.
