Credit Card/Debit Card Fraud Advisory

The Bermuda Police Service Fraud Unit would like to remind all businesses and persons conducting financial transactions for debit & credit cards to be vigilant in order to prevent the perpetration of crime.

A number of cases have been reported to Police in recent weeks whereby persons presented credit or debit cards to businesses that were either stolen, or that they were not authorized to use. Significant sums of money have been unlawfully obtained as a result.

In almost all cases, the persons conducting these transactions did not verify that the signature matched the cardholder’s legitimate signature or request photo identification to match the name on the credit or debit card.

The Bermuda Police Service would like to ask the management and staff of all businesses to increase their level of vigilance in this regard by asking for a secondary form of identification (i.e. a driver’s license) to prevent and stem the volume of credit card theft, and subsequent fraud.

All incidents are under investigation. Police are appealing to members of the public who have witnessed these incidents or may have information pertaining to them to contact their respective Police Station, Police Headquarters at 295-0011 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1 (800) 623-8477.
