‘Guardian’ Runs Aground While Rescuing Disabled Vessel

Around 8:30pm on Monday, the Marine Police Unit received a call from Bermuda Radio requesting assistance for ‘Sea Spirit’, a disabled 40 ft. motor yacht apparently bound for Bermuda, which was 30 miles west of the island. ‘Sea Spirit’ had been drifting for 12 days after its engines were disabled when rope/fishing netting became entangled in the vessel’s propeller. Additionally, the crew’s attempts to sail to Bermuda proved unsuccessful.

The Police vessel ‘Guardian’ was dispatched to assist around 10pm Monday and located ‘Sea Spirit’ in the early hours of this morning. ‘Guardian’ took the 40 ft. motor yacht in tow and was heading back to shore when the Police vessel ran aground around 5:30am in the area of Daniel’s Head. ‘Guardian’ managed to float free a short time later and both vessels are now in Dockyard. No one was injured in the mishap. ‘Guardian’ sustained minor propeller damage and is in dry dock for damage assessment. Despite this, ‘Guardian’ is expected to be back in service shortly.

All incidents are under investigation. Police are appealing to members of the public who have witnessed these incidents or may have information pertaining to them to contact their respective Police Station, Police Headquarters at 295-0011 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1 (800) 623-8477.
