In our continuing efforts to address individuals who insist on disobeying Bermuda ’s traffic laws, officers have been targeting various offences recently, in particular:

• Unlicensed & uninsured vehicles
• Making a third lane
• Speeding
• Motorcyclists riding with unfastened helmets
• Proper use of seatbelts and
• Unsafe carrying of passengers (two wheeled vehicles and four wheeled vehicles)

The Roads Policing Unit and Watch personnel have been focusing on these issues and this morning in particular, the heightened Police presence caused some motorists to be inconvenienced. The Bermuda Police Service apologizes to those who were unintentionally delayed; however, we cannot let the above mentioned unlawful and dangerous practices go unchecked.

From 6:30am to 9am today, Police conducted traffic checks in the central parishes (Paget, Pembroke & Devonshire). At no time did Police officers block any major arteries entering the City of Hamilton. Listed below were the offences detected:

• No Drivers License = 4
• No Vehicle License = 4
• No Vehicle Insurance = 4
• Seat Belt Offence = 31
• Tint Offence = 6
• Helmet Offence = 1
• Disobeying a Traffic Sign = 15
• Speed = 4
• Due Care = 1

A total of 70 tickets were issued this morning, with 3 individuals arrested for outstanding warrants. We plan to continue this road safety initiative, as the recent sudden death of Raymond Curtis highlights some of the offences being targeted. The accused in that matter allegedly did not have a driver’s license and was allegedly driving an unlicensed, uninsured car. Also, yesterday’s high speed chase through Pembroke shows the blatant disregard some members of the public have for the laws of the road.
