Calvin Smith Retires from the BPS After Over 42 Years of Public Service

Earlier this week, at 5pm Monday 31st May, Staff Officer Calvin Smith officially retired from the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) after over 42 years of public service – which saw him receive the Overseas Territories Police Medal in 2016. Calvin (known by many as Cal) Smith joined the BPS in 1984, having already served with the Bermuda Regiment. He has worked in nearly every area of the Service; has an extensive investigative background in the Criminal Investigation Department and the Serious Crime Unit, and has received 14 Commissioner’s Commendations for his detective work. He served for five years as the Head of Special Branch and was the Government Security Officer until 2008. He then served as the Tasking Manager in the Intelligence Division and has attended several courses both locally & overseas. During his career Cal also received two Commissioner’s Merit Awards, one Bermuda Reserve Police Merit Award, 30 Letters of Good Work, the Bermuda Police Service Long Service Award (18 years), several trophies and certificates for both local and overseas sports tournaments as well as the 2007/2008 Bermuda Police Service Officer of the Year Award and the 2009 AKA Man of the Year Award. In addition, he is still involved with the Police Week Committee (starting from 2007, to date). In 2018, Cal was voted President of the BPS Ex-Police Officers’ Association and remains in that post. Cal reached the rank of Chief Inspector and started his tenure as the Commissioner’s Staff Officer in March 2016, as a Chief Inspector. He served as Staff Officer until 31st May 2021, assisting both former Commissioner Michael DeSilva and current Commissioner Stephen Corbishley, before retiring from the police. Including his service with the Bermuda Regiment from 1979, Cal’s total service to the people of Bermuda is over 42 years.



Stolen Motorcycle Recovered, Two Suspects Arrested After Police Pursuit

A stolen motorcycle was recovered Wednesday night (2nd June) and two suspects – said to be an 18-year-old Smith’s parish woman and a 19-year-old Devonshire woman – were arrested in connection with the matter. Around 9:15pm Wednesday, a police unit that was stationary on Front Street in the City of Hamilton observed the two suspects travelling east along Front Street on a motorcycle. The rider failed to stop for a red light at the junction of Front Street and Burnaby Street. Apparently despite using the police vehicle’s lights and sirens, the rider led police on a pursuit, which ended in the Ferrars Lane, Pembroke area where both young women were detained. The motorcycle they were riding on was later confirmed to be stolen and as a result, it was impounded by police.



Fifth Road Fatality for 2021: 16-Year-Old Amber Bridges

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 16-year-old Amber Bridges, Bermuda’s fifth road fatality for 2021. Our thoughts and prayers remain with Amber’s family and friends at this tragic time. It now appears that Amber was riding her 50cc scooter east along South Road in Southampton – and a van, driven by a 57-year-old Sandys parish man was travelling in the opposite direction – when the vehicles collided as they attempted to negotiate a series of bends nearest to Cross Bay Road (in the vicinity of the Fairmont Southampton golf course), around 12:15pm Sunday, 30th May. Amber was seriously injured and despite lifesaving efforts by emergency medical technicians (EMTs) at the scene, which continued as she was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance, the St. George’s teen was later pronounced dead at the hospital. A BPS Family Liaison Officer is providing ongoing support to Amber’s loved ones. The van driver was not hurt.



Fifth Road Fatality for 2021 [Updated]

A 16-year-old St. George’s girl seriously hurt after a collision occurred involving the 50cc scooter she was riding (apparently headed east) and a van (apparently being driven west) along South Road in Southampton, near Dolphin Ridge, around 12:15pm today (Sunday, 30th May) sadly later succumbed to her injuries at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) extends sincere condolences to the 16-year-old girl’s family and friends. A BPS Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to support her loved ones. This marks the fifth road fatality for 2021. Formal identification is anticipated on Monday, 31st May. Traffic diversions were in effect for approximately three hours while a Traffic Collision Investigator and the Forensic Support Unit processed the scene.



Reported Serious Two Vehicle Collision on South Road in Southampton [Updated]

Around 12:15pm today (Sunday, 30th May) police and other first responders were dispatched to a reported serious two vehicle collision on South Road in Southampton, near the junction with Dolphin Ridge. Details are limited at this time. However, early information suggests that a van and a 50cc scooter were involved. The rider of the scooter, believed to be a 16-year-old girl, was seriously hurt. She was given CPR at the scene which continued as she was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance. An update on her condition is anticipated in due course. The driver of the van was not injured. Traffic delays in the area are to be expected as police process the scene.



25-Year-Old Man Stabbed at Horseshoe Bay on Bermuda Day

Around 7:15pm Friday, 28th May (Bermuda Day) police officers responded to a reported disturbance at Horseshoe Bay in Southampton. Approximately 15 minutes later, police officers also responded to a reported disturbance at Chaplin Bay in Warwick. However, on arrival at both locations, nothing untoward was encountered. Detectives later learned that a 25-year-old man, who had been at Horseshoe Bay beach earlier Friday evening, attended King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of a stab wound to his abdomen. At last check the injury was not considered life threatening and the young man was listed in stable condition in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.



Bermuda Day Holiday Weekend Policing

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) takes this opportunity to advise the public on matters related to ensuring a peaceful and safe time for everyone during this year’s Bermuda Day holiday weekend. Acting Superintendent Tracy Adams – “I would like to share the general policing plan with the community, which involves visible BPS patrols during the Bermuda Day holiday weekend (Friday, 28th May through Sunday, 30th May), and reassure residents that any acts of anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. However, if you see something, say something. Please call 211, the main police telephone number 295-0011 or 911 in an emergency. Police patrols will also be vigilant regarding compliance by members of the public and businesses to current COVID-19 protocols.



Two Males Arrested After Fight Outside Berkeley Institute

Around 3:30 p.m. today, Monday 17th May, police responded to a report of a fight involving a group of four males, outside the Berkeley Institute. Callers reported one of the males was armed with a knife, while another was carrying a baseball bat. Upon arrival, police received information that two of the males involved in the incident left on a motorcycle and two others had gone to a nearby residence. Officers attended the residence and arrested the two males who allegedly were armed. There were several witnesses to this incident and police are appealing for individuals, particularly a woman who recorded the incident on a cell phone to please call 211 or, the main police number, 295-0011. The Bermuda Police Service would like to thank those members of the public who have already assisted by providing information which helped in identifying the two suspects who were subsequently arrested.



18 Year Old Man Arrested in Connection With Stabbing & Robbery

Detectives have arrested an 18 year old male in connection with the stabbing & robbery of a 16 year old male on Friday evening. Detective Superintendent Nicholas Pedro said: “Evidence obtained by officers led them to make the arrest. A second male has also been interviewed in relation to this serious matter. The young male victim remains in hospital, being treated for serious injuries. We would like to thank those members of the public who have come forward so far, as we recognize that we are reliant on the public to help make us all safer.



16 Year Old Male Hospitalised After Stabbing Incident [Updated]

Shortly before 5:45 p.m. yesterday, Friday 7th May, Police and Emergency Medical Services personnel were dispatched to a reported stabbing incident at an area opposite the Southampton Rangers field on South Road, Southampton. Upon arrival it was ascertained the victim, a sixteen-year-old male, suffered stab wounds to the torso, but was conscious and breathing. He was attended to at the scene by EMTs and transported via ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, for treatment to his injuries, which were described as life threatening. The suspect in this matter is described as a dark brown complexioned, black male with a short haircut, wearing teal coloured pants and a dark top. There were a number of individuals who reportedly witnessed this incident and while investigators have already spoken with some of them, there are others they urgently need to hear from as they look to bring whomerver is responsible for this brazen act of violence before the courts.



Renewed Jordan Outerbridge Murder Witness Appeal

Detective Superintendent Nicholas Pedro, Officer in Charge, BPS Crime Division - Sadly, today marks one month since the brutal murder of Jordan Outerbridge. One month since his children lost a father, and a wife lost her husband. Despite our continued best efforts, we have so far not received the public response we had hoped for in a case that involved the senseless killing of a man. As such, we are re-issuing a call for anyone who may know anything about the murder of Jordan Outerbridge, to come forward and say something. Crime Stoppers can be a very helpful option in that regard. They exist to help people who – for whatever reason – won't, or can't speak directly to the police, but want to do the right thing. Crime Stoppers guarantees that you will remain 100 per cent anonymous. They are not interested in who you are and will never, ask for your details – all they want is information, however small, that might help find those behind this murder.



Renewed Appeal for Witnesses to Recent Fatal & Serious Injury Collisions

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) continues to investigate Tuesday evening’s two separate fatal collisions – as well as the serious injury collision that left two motorcyclists hospitalised – and would like to thank those witnesses that have already come forward, while making a renewed appeal for specific witnesses / information. Constable Nidra McKenzie–Simons is the investigating officer for the collision that claimed the life of 56-year-old Marvin Lambe (third road fatality of 2021), which occurred at the pedestrian crossing outside the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo.



Chief Inspector Glasford to Take Over Professional Standards Department

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) wishes to announce the departure of Superintendent Gill Murray, who has completed a period of secondment in charge of the service’s Professional Standards Department (PSD).  It is further announced that Chief Inspector Arthur Glasford will take over this important role going forward. Commissioner of Police Stephen Corbishley stated: “The BPS places professionalism at the heart of everything we do. The work of our Professional Standards Department has been at the forefront of this work to ensure we secure and protect the confidence of local communities in the work we deliver each and every day. I am delighted for Superintendent Murray who goes on to promotion with her home police service, the British Transport Police. Her leadership with the BPS has been first class. She has contributed greatly to our work and I consider that has assisted the next step she has achieved in her policing career. Our congratulations go with her as she departs. I am also delighted to welcome Chief Inspector Glasford into this role. Mr. Glasford is a seasoned detective and senior leader whom I have no doubt will continue the essential work we do in this area."



Two Motorcyclists Require Hospital Treatment After Devonshire Collision

Two motorcyclists – said to be a 40-year-old Sandys parish man and a 21-year-old Sandys parish woman – required treatment at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after colliding in the vicinity of Devonshire Bay around 6pm Tuesday, 4th May. Both motorcycles were extensively damaged. It now appears that the 21-year-old woman was riding east along South Road and attempted to turn onto Devonshire Bay Road, while the 40-year-old man was riding west along South Road, when the collision occurred at the junction of South Road and Devonshire Bay Road in Devonshire. Apparently the 21-year-old woman sustained facial injuries, while the 40-year-old man sustained a broken rib and an ankle injury. At last check both remained in the hospital.



Fourth Road Fatality for 2021: 81-Year-Old Leon Eugene Thomas

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 81-year-old Eugene Thomas and extends sincere condolences to his family and friends. Mr. Thomas – believed to be a Southampton resident – was seriously injured when he attempted to walk across South Road in Southampton near the junction with Lighthouse Road and was struck by a motorcycle being ridden west along South Road around 5:47pm Tuesday, 4th May. Despite lifesaving efforts at the crash site and being rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance, sadly Mr. Thomas was later pronounced dead. The motorcyclist involved, said to be a 19-year-old Paget man, apparently sustained injuries to his leg and back and was admitted to the hospital for treatment. He was also arrested and later bailed in connection with this fatal collision.



Third Road Fatality for 2021: 56-Year-Old Marvin Lambe

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 56-year-old Marvin Lambe and extends sincere condolences to his family and friends. Mr. Lambe – believed to be a Smith’s parish resident – was seriously injured when the motorcycle he was riding east on North Shore Road collided with the back of a car (also being driven east on North Shore Road), that had stopped to allow a man and woman to cross the pedestrian crossing near The Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo in Hamilton parish around 5:30pm Tuesday, 4th May. Despite lifesaving efforts at the crash site and being rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance, sadly Mr. Lambe was later pronounced dead. The two pedestrians struck by the motorcycle, said to be a 53-year-old Devonshire man and a 27-year-old Hamilton parish woman, were treated at the hospital for non-life threatening injuries and later discharged.



Appeal to Witnesses of Hamilton Parish Collision & Devonshire Collision

Around 5:30pm Tuesday 4th May 2021 a collision involving a motorcycle, a car and two pedestrians was reported on North Shore Road in Hamilton parish outside The Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo. Initial information indicates that the motorcyclist was seriously injured and required CPR at the scene, before being rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for further treatment. Both pedestrians, a man and a woman, were also hurt – but they were said to be conscious and breathing. Their injuries are believed to be less serious. Traffic travelling east was diverted along Harrington Sound Road while the scene was processed by a BPS Traffic Collision Investigator and Forensic Support Unit personnel. Those diversions are no longer in effect. Update: Wednesday, May 5th - Third road fatality for 2021. Another collision was reported around 6pm Tuesday, 4th May 2021, in the South Road, Devonshire Bay Road, Devonshire area involving two motorcycles. Initial information indicates that the two riders, one male and one female, were hurt. Both were transported to hospital via ambulance for treatment. At this time the female rider’s injuries may be more serious than the male rider’s injuries.



Serious Collision: South Road, Southampton

Around 5:47pm today, Tuesday 4th May 2021, police and other first responders attended a collision involving a pedestrian and a motorcycle, along South Road near the junction with Lighthouse Road, Southampton. Early reports suggest that a 19 year old man was traveling west on a motorcycle, when he was involved in a collision with a 82 year old male pedestrian, who was attempting to cross the road. Both parties were conveyed via ambulance to KEMH for treatment to their injuries. The motorcycle rider is believed to have suffered a serious leg injury, while the pedestrian is believed to have suffered serious head injuries.



Appeal for Additional Witnesses to Serious Two Vehicle Collision

The investigation into a serious two vehicle collision involving a truck and a motorcycle that occurred around 6:35pm Tuesday, April 27th at the junction of Middle Road and Verdmont Road in Smith’s parish continues, with any additional witnesses urged to come forward. The 20-year-old woman riding the motorcycle at the time – said to be a City of Hamilton resident – sustained a head injury that required treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. It is understood that she has since been flown overseas for further medical care.



Serious Collision Involving Motorcycle & Truck, Fermale Rider in ICU [Updated]

Around 6:35p.m. on Tuesday, 27th April 2021, police attended a report of a serious road traffic collision involving two vehicles near the junction of Verdmont Road and Middle Road Smith's parish. Reports are the driver of a truck was attempting to turn off of Verdmont Road headed east on Middle Road, when the vehicle was struck by a bike, headed west on Middle Road. The collision resulted in the 20-year-old female bike rider sustaining a serious head injury. She was transported via ambulance to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and is now warded in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. The truck driver was uninjured.
