Renewed Fraud Advisory: Beware of Calls From Fake Bank Representatives

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) continues to receive reports regarding fraudulent activity targeting local businesses as well as members of the public, where individuals posing as representatives of local banks are contacting customers and falsely claiming that fraudulent activity has been detected on their accounts. The fraudsters then request login credentials to correct the problem. However, once they gain access to the accounts, they quickly transfer the funds in those accounts to overseas locations. The BPS once again urges residents to remain vigilant and note the following to protect against falling victim to these types of scams: Bank representatives will never ask you over the phone for your personal account login credentials. If you are uncertain about the legitimacy of a call, hang up immediately and contact your bank directly by phone or in person. Do not download or install any third-party software at the request of someone claiming to be a bank representative. If you receive an email claiming to be from your bank, you should check the email header to see if it matches the details of legitimate emails you've received from your bank before. Please have this discussion with any seniors you are related to or are friendly with as they are often particularly targeted by these criminals.

Suspected Controlled Drugs Seized

Shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Friday 3rd January 2025, a 47 year old Bermudian male was detained at L.F Wade International Airport by HM Bermuda Customs. During a subsequent search, a quantity of suspected controlled drugs was found concealed inside his luggage. The Bermuda Police Service Drug Unit was notified and the subject was arrested on suspicion of importation of controlled drugs. Inspector Nidol Barker of the BPS Drugs Unit stated, “This seizure is significant and carries an estimated street value of approximately 700 thousand dollars”. “Thanks to the vigilance of our partners at HM Bermuda Customs, these items were prevented from making it onto the streets where they could have posed a serious threat to the safety and well-being of members of our community.” An investigation into this matter is now underway. The arrested male is expected to appear before the courts in due course.

Witness Appeal: Motorcyclist Hurt in Single Vehicle Causeway Collision

Around 5:20 p.m. on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, police and Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) personnel were dispatched to a single-vehicle road traffic collision involving a motorcycle, on the Causeway, St. George. It was reported that the motorcycle rider, a 19-year-old male, was travelling in an easterly direction along the Causeway, when upon approaching the Bailey bridge, he lost control of the vehicle and fell on the roadway. He was attended to at the scene by BFRS staff before being transferred by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries which were described as non-life threatening. Traffic was restricted to one lane for approximately two hours while the collision scene was processed. We wish to thank the public for their patience and cooperation during this process. Man Hospitalised After Two Vehicle Hamilton Parish Collision Sunday Night

Inquiries are ongoing after a two vehicle collision occurred on Blue Hole Hill in Hamilton parish around 9:15pm Sunday, 5th January 2025. It appears that the two cars involved were being driven in opposite directions along Blue Hole Hill when they collided, in the vicinity of North Shore Road. Apparently there was a female driver and two male passengers in the first car, while a male driver and passenger were in the second car. It was reported that the male driver and passenger of the second car fled the scene on foot after the collision. A male, believed to be the driver of the second car, later attended Southside Police Station. One of the male passengers in the first car sustained a head injury, which was not considered serious initially. He was conscious and received treatment at the scene by emergency medical technicians, before being transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for further medical assessment. The injured male, said to be a 27-year-old St. George’s resident, was then admitted into the hospital for additional medical care, after his head injury was deemed more serious than originally thought. No other injuries have been reported at this time. Traffic flow near the collision site was disrupted for approximately two hours after the incident. Over Half of 44 Bermuda Legends & Superstars Sports Cards Now Revealed

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) and Hamilton Princess & Beach Club are excited to confirm that with January’s release, over half of the 44 Bermuda Legends and Superstars sports cards have been officially revealed! This month’s set of six includes Legends and Superstars (two men and four women), featuring (in no particular order): Clarence Parfitt (Cricket) Legend Clarence “Nicky” Saunders (Track & Field) Legend Erica Hawley (Triathlon) Superstar Amanda Swan (Rugby) Superstar Dominique Richardson (Netball) Superstar Emma Harvey (Swimming) Superstar All 44 Legends and Superstars sports cards feature the local athlete’s name, photo and sport on the front, while the reverse side provides a synopsis of their notable sporting achievements, as well as a personal quote. There are only 11 Legends sports cards in total and 33 Superstars sports cards in total, for this 2024-2025 series. Thanks to the partnership with Hamilton Princess, a total of 24 collectible sports cards have been released since 1st October 2024, with fresh cards scheduled to be distributed in limited batches monthly, until all 44 are available in May 2025. Our youth are encouraged to actively seek out police officers on patrol throughout the island for an opportunity, through positive interaction or engagement, to receive one of the latest collectible sports cards! For our part, we will maintain a high-profile police presence as we provide public reassurance and work to deter criminal activity and anti-social behaviour. We are well prepared to respond to and deal with calls for assistance by members of the public, to incidents of crime or disorder. To that end, there will be increased traffic enforcement with officers adopting a zero-tolerance approach to road traffic offences, particularly those involving impaired driving. During this period, licensed premises and private venues throughout the island will hold New Year’s Eve theme parties and events. In keeping with tradition, those in attendance may engage in having a few drinks to celebrate. Please be reminded that Roadside Sobriety Checkpoints are in place having commenced on 24 December 2024, through to Thursday 2nd January 2025. Motorcyclist Hurt in Reported Serious Paget Collision

Around 11:30 PM on Sunday 29th of December 2024, police and other first responders were dispatched to a report of a serious single vehicle road traffic accident, which occurred on Middle Road at the junction with Berwyn Hill, Paget. On arrival police discovered an unresponsive male lying in the road. He was taken to King Edward Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries, the extent of which has been described as being serious. Initial information suggest that the man was traveling in a westerly direction when the motorcycle he was riding struck a wall at the entrance to Berwyn Hill. Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is asked to contact Police Constable Rajiv Bailey on 211 or rbailey@bps.bm.

Prioritise Safety: Selling or Buying Items Online Involving Unknown Persons

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) is urging residents to prioritise their safety, if intending to meet up with any unknown individual, to buy or sell items advertised online. Three reports have been received between the 24th and 26th December 2024, where an unknown individual stole an item offered for sale on Facebook Marketplace, after meeting unsuspecting sellers at three separate prearranged locations. The stolen items included popular brand name electronics. Inquiries are ongoing regarding all of these matters, with the possibility some instances may be linked. Noting the popularity of Facebook Marketplace and other similar online commerce sites, the following proactive advice is strongly recommended. Safety First View the buyer or seller profile. Take a screenshot of it, if possible and take note of the profile’s web address (URL). Check how long the profile has been active, when it was created and how many friends the account has. Be wary of newly created profiles that only have a few friends, or no friends at all. Also, be suspicious of promoted accounts that have testimonials from recently created profiles. Ask for a phone number and speak to the person before meeting. Never go alone. Bring a relative or friend along and let other family members or friends know where and when the exchange is taking place. Meet in well-lit, public areas before the hours of darkness. Avoid inviting an unknown individual to your home. Take note of the vehicle used by the buyer or seller, including the colour, type and its licence plate. Investigation Ongoing After Two Car Devonshire Collision Monday

An investigation into the circumstances regarding a two car collision that occurred at the junction of Middle Road and Tee Street in Devonshire, around 11am Monday, 23rd December 2024, is ongoing. It appears that one car was being driven along Middle Road, while the other car was being driven along Tee Street, when the vehicles collided at the junction. At this time, there is no indication that anyone involved was seriously hurt. The driver of one of the cars, understood to be an 89-year-old Devonshire man, was transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for medical assessment. The driver and passenger of the other car were understood to be a 67-year-old St. George’s man and a 39-year-old St. George’s woman. Apparently the St. George’s man was unhurt, but attended the hospital for medical assessment as a precaution and was later discharged. Traffic diversions at the collision site were in place for approximately two hours, while the scene was processed. Both damaged cars were later towed away. Witness Appeal: Confirmed Firearm Incident in the Court Street Area

Around 7:05pm Saturday, 21st December 2024, a confirmed firearm incident occurred in the Court Street, North Hamilton area. It appears that a white motorcycle, with a rider and pillion passenger dressed in coloured clothing, was travelling along Court Street near the junction with Angle Street, when the pillion passenger discharged a firearm. There were no reported injuries. Forensic examination of the scene later confirmed that a firearm had been discharged. Inquiries continue regarding this confirmed firearm incident and any witnesses or persons with relevant information are encouraged to contact Acting Detective Inspector Anneka Donawa by calling 717-2250, or e-mailing adonawa@bps.bm, at the earliest opportunity. Outcome of Investigation into ACOP Weekes

Deputy Commissioner of Police Na'imah Astwood - "Following an independent investigation into allegations of Gross Misconduct on the part of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACOP), Martin Weekes, it has been determined there is no case to answer. However an allegation of discreditable conduct arising from the same matter was re-assessed, with the outcome being Management Advice, in accordance with Order 18 (5b) of the Police Conduct Orders 2016. The allegations arose from a personal WhatsApp conversation, which took place in 2018, between ACOP Weekes and a former BPS officer. This conversation, which was referenced in a Court of Appeal in its judgment, was later brought to the attention of the Commissioner of Police. The investigation was conducted by a ranking officer from a United Kingdom police force. ACOP Weekes is scheduled to resume the role of ACOP Operations on December 23, 2024. As a delegated Appropriate Authority in the Bermuda Police Service, I do not typically provide detailed outcomes for such matters. However, given the rank of ACOP Weekes, the public attention this matter has garnered and in the interest of transparency, this outcome has been shared." Khiry Furbert Murder Investigation

Acting Detective Chief Inspector Clifford Roberts – “It is with regret that the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) can now confirm the death of Mr. Khiry Furbert, in his 34th year of life and father to an 11 year old daughter. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Furbert during this time. At 12:42am on  Monday, 16th December 2024, police received a ‘911’ call from a member of the public who reported seeing a male laying in the road along Tribe Road No. 5 Ord Road, Paget next to a vehicle. Police and medical personnel attended the report where Mr. Furbert was found unresponsive. Lifesaving efforts were commenced and he was transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital by ambulance. Upon further examination at the hospital, Mr. Furbert was found to have suffered and succumbed to a fatal gunshot wound. The scene has been processed by the BPS Forensic team and forensic evidence was recovered. Officers from the Serious Crime Unit have commenced and are actively conducting house to house inquires and retrieving CCTV in an effort to progress this matter. The next of kin have been notified and a Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to assist the family during this tragic period. Public safety is one of our top priorities and we want to assure you that officers are actively investigating this incident. The investigative team would like to speak with anyone who may have seen Mr. Furbert earlier in the evening of Sunday 15th December 2024 leading up to the time of his death. Be assured - we will continue to deploy resources in areas affected by crime so that our neighbourhoods remain safe and secure. Around 12:45 a.m. on Monday, December 16, 2024, police received a report of a male lying on the roadway along Tribe Road Number 5, Paget. Units were dispatched to the location where they found the male unresponsive with an apparent head wound, lying near an unattended motorcar with the engine running. EMTs were on scene and commenced life-saving efforts which continued as the victim was transported to the King Edward the VII Memorial Hospital for further treatment. A forensic support unit attended the scene and recovered evidence to suggest a firearm had discharged at that location. However, there were no reports of gunshots in the area. An investigation into this matter has now commenced and anyone with information or, who may have seen any suspicious activity occurring in the area of Tribe Road Number 5 and Ord Road, Paget, prior to this incident is asked to call the main police number, 295-0011. Officer Dismissed

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) announces that following a disciplinary hearing, a Police Superintendent has been dismissed from the service without notice. The dismissal comes after a panel found the officer guilty of conduct that was deemed incompatible with the high standards of integrity required for continued service within the BPS. Darrin Simons, Commissioner of Police stated, "This decision, while difficult, reflects our unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity within the Bermuda Police Service. We recognize that public trust is paramount in our ability to serve and protect effectively." This action underscores the BPS's dedication to holding all officers, regardless of rank or length of service, to the same high standards of professional conduct. The service remains committed to its mission of making Bermuda safer through professional, transparent, and accountable policing. No further comment will be made.

One Year Since Murder of Steve Parkes, Investigation Remains Active

Detectives continue to investigate the murder of Steve Parkes, which occurred around 7:48pm Monday, 11th December 2023 in the Mary Victoria Road, Devonshire area. Mr. Parkes was 53-years-old when he was fatally shot outside his home, as he was about to get on his motorcycle. The investigators renew their appeal for relevant information, in particular from area residents who may have seen any suspicious individuals or vehicles in the Mary Victoria Road, Devonshire neighbourhood on the night Mr. Parkes was killed. All information received will be treated in the strictest confidence. Two Car Drivers Treated & Released From Hospital After Collision

Two female car drivers were treated and later discharged from King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, after being involved in a collision around 9:45am Monday, 9th December 2024, at the junction of Court Street and Reid Street, in the City of Hamilton. It now appears that one of the women involved, said to be a 67-year-old Warwick resident, was driving down Court Street and the other woman, said to be a 46-year-old Sandys parish resident, was driving along Reid Street when they collided at the junction. Both injured women were transported to hospital via ambulance a short time after. It is understood that the Court Street traffic light was green at the time. There were traffic disruptions in the immediate area for approximately two hours while the collision scene was processed. The two damaged cars had to be towed away. One witness made themselves known to the attending police officers and inquiries continue.

At last check, a 19-year-old local male motorcyclist seriously injured in a collision with another motorcycle rider at the junction of Verdmont Road and St. Mark’s Road in Smith’s parish shortly before 10pm Saturday, 7th December 2024, remained at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, in stable condition. The other rider involved, understood to be a 23-year-old local woman, received hospital treatment for her injuries and was later discharged. It now appears that the 23-year-old was travelling along St. Mark’s Road and the 19-year-old was travelling along Verdmont Road, when the collision occurred at the junction. Inquiries continue and any witnesses or persons with relevant information are now encouraged to contact Sergeant Milton Hill by calling 211, or e-mailing mjhill@bps.bm.

Scam Advisory: Compromised WhatsApp Accounts Used for Fraud

The Bermuda Police Service is advising the public to exercise increased caution in the wake of reports of people’s WhatsApp accounts being compromised and used to perpetrate fraudulent financial schemes. Hackers reportedly gain unauthorized access to an individual's WhatsApp account by deceiving the user into disclosing their six-digit verification code. Having gained access, the hackers impersonate the victim and message that person’s contacts, requesting urgent financial assistance or, sensitive information. What to Look Out For: Unusual Messages from Friends or Family: If a contact messages you asking for financial assistance, verify their identity through a phone call or in-person conversation before taking any action. Requests for OTP or Verification Codes: It is imperative that you do not disclose your one-time password (OTP) or verification codes to any individual, regardless of whether the request appears to originate from a reputable source. Urgency and Pressure: Fraudsters frequently instill a sense of urgency in order to compel victims to act without considering the consequences. Protect Yourself: Enable two-step verification. Enable WhatsApp's two-step verification for an added degree of protection. This feature requires a PIN to access your account. Avoid Sharing Personal Information: Be cautious when sharing personal or account-related information, even with trusted contacts. Stay Informed: Regularly update yourself on cybersecurity best practices to recognize and avoid scams. What to do if you are a victim: Immediately inform your contacts via alternative means of the hack to prevent further exploitation. Report the incident to WhatsApp via the in-app help feature. This month’s set of six Superstars (two women and four men), features (in no particular order): Rockal Evans (Sailing) Delray Rawlins (Cricket) Micah Lambert (Tennis) Bridget Marshall (Tennis) Alshauntae Symons (Bowling) Kristopher Trott (Track & Field) With the annual observance of the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities held on 3rd December each year, Superstars Micah Lambert, Bridget Marshall, Alshauntae Symons and Kris Trott join Legend Jessica Lewis as the first Special Olympics athletes and first Paralympic athlete respectively to be highlighted in the history of this local card series, dating back to the original set circulated in 1986. In partnership with Hamilton Princess, a total of 18 new collectible sports cards have been released since 1st October 2024, with fresh cards scheduled to be distributed in limited batches monthly, until all 44 are available in May 2025. As part of this youth focused initiative, several schools across the island have already held special assemblies with police officers as guest speakers, as well as athletes sharing personal stories of perseverance, with more planned before the end of this school term. In addition to these prearranged school visits, our youth are encouraged to actively seek out police officers on patrol throughout the island for an opportunity, through positive interaction or engagement, to receive one of the latest collectible sports cards! Students may also collect one of the 18 inspiring sports cards released to date at any police station (Hamilton, Somerset and Southside). Which local sporting heroes are next?
