Injury RTC

Sunday, March 30,2008

Around 4:25 this morning, Police attended a reported serious single vehicle road traffic collision at the junction of North Shore Road and Palmetto Road in Devonshire (Barkers Hill round-a-bout). Some details about the collision remain unclear; however, it appears that two men were on a motorcycle traveling east on Palmetto Road when the rider lost control and collided with the western ‘island’ of the round-a-bout. Both men were thrown from the cycle as a result.

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 39 year old Martha Hoopes of Illinois, USA. Mrs. Hoopes was traveling east on Middle Road in Southampton near the junction with Lighthouse Hill (entrance of Fairmont Southampton) with her 9 year old daughter as a pillion passenger when a collision took place between her livery cycle and a van traveling in a westerly direction. This resulted in her daughter receiving injuries and Mrs. Hoopes being rendered unconscious at the scene.



Missing Person

Police would like the public’s assistance in locating 38 year old Ricardo Eugene Walker. He has been missing since March 12th, 2008 when he was last spoken to. He is described as being between 5'8"- 6'0", medium build, light skin, with blue eyes. His last known address is Granaway Heights, Southampton. However, he is believed to live somewhere on Lovers Lane, Paget.



Suspicious Circumstances

Around 8:10 this morning, Police attended a report of suspicious circumstances on Parsons Road in Pembroke. On arrival officers spoke with the complainants, checked the vehicle and collected evidence to be forensically tested for fingerprints. An investigation into this incident is underway.

Sudden Death

Around 2:55am today, Police received a report of a sudden death at the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute in Devonshire. It appears that the lifeless body of a 35 year old Southampton man was found on the premises. No further information will be released until the next of kin have been notified. Foul play has not been ruled out. An autopsy is anticipated.

Around 10:05am today, Police received a report of a fire at a Scott’s Hill Road, Sandy’s parish residence. On Police arrival Bermuda Fire Service personnel were at the scene dealing with the blaze, which was eventually extinguished. The resident, an 87 year old Sandy’s parish woman, was extracted from the home and received CPR at the scene before being rushed to KEMH via ambulance. She subsequently died. No further information will be released until the next of kin have been notified.

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 48 year old Rudell Smith of Southampton. Mr. Smith was involved in a serious road traffic collision on Ord Road in Paget near the junction with Norden Lane around 7:10pm on Saturday, when he lost control of his motorcycle and struck an embankment after colliding with a young woman on a pedal cycle and a young man walking with her. Mr. Smith was rushed to KEMH via ambulance but subsequently succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 8pm Saturday.

Around 12 noon today, Police received a report of a serious road traffic collision resulting in injury on Middle Road in Warwick between Khyber Pass and Longford Road involving an auxiliary cycle, a car and a truck. It appears that the truck was traveling east on Middle Road and the auxiliary cycle was behind the truck also traveling east. The car was traveling in the opposite direction.



Fire

Around 2pm today, Police attended a reported fire at a Schools Drive, Devonshire residence. The Bermuda Fire Service was already at the scene and had the fire under control. The home was unoccupied at the time. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Drug Seizure

On Saturday the 5th January 2008, the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted an American registered private vessel in the waters off the Bahamas. Onboard they found approximately two thousand pounds of cannabis. Law enforcement agencies are satisfied the shipment was destined for Bermuda.



Handbag Snatch

Around 10am today, Police received a report of a handbag snatch on Parsons Road in Pembroke. The victim, a 51 year old Pembroke woman, stated that around 9:45am she was walking across a pedestrian crossing when an unknown man on a motorcycle rode past and snatched her handbag. The suspect then made good his escape. The brown Louis Vuitton handbag contained a quantity of cash and personal items. The Pembroke woman was not injured.



Missing Juvenile

The Bermuda Police Service is appealing for the public’s assistance in locating 17 year old Karl-Shay Spalding. Ms. Spalding is described as 5’3” tall, brown skinned of medium build with long black hair. The 17 year old was last seen at The Education Centre (TEC) on Wednesday, January 23rd and was wearing her school uniform (blue pants, a yellow shirt and a blue jacket). She is known to frequent the Deepdale, Pembroke area.
