Commissioner of Police Responds to Incident at Southampton Rangers Sports Club

On Saturday outside of the Southampton Rangers Sports Club there was an incident that once again put the safety at our sporting events or specifically at football games back into the spotlight. A football game took place with Boulevard Blazers Football Club’s development team and Southampton Rangers Sports Club’s development team at 1 p.m. at Southampton Rangers Sports Club. At the end of the match players from the Boulevard team were reportedly getting into a taxi when several unknown males attacked the vehicle using projectiles and other objects. Police were called and upon our arrival it was ascertained that the taxi had already left and the suspects had also made good their escape.

Over the last few days much has been said about the Bermuda Police Service and the lack of attendance at a particular sporting venue this weekend. We would like to take this opportunity to clarify a few of the facts involved in this incident. First, on Saturday October 17th there was a football match between Boulevard Blazers development team and Southampton Rangers development team at 1pm at Southampton Rangers Sports Club.

Sudden Death At Westgate Correctional Facility

Around 10am today, Police received a report of the sudden death of an inmate at the Westgate Correctional Facility. Details about what occurred are unclear; however the inmate, a 37 year old man, was subsequently pronounced dead by an on call physician. Inquiries into this incident are underway. No further information will be released until the next of kin has been notified.

Around 4pm on Monday, Police received a report of an industrial accident at a construction site on Coney Island Road in Hamilton parish. Details about what occurred are unclear; however, initial information indicated that a construction worker was trapped under a forklift.

From Monday, September 21st to Sunday, September 27th Police conducted high visibility patrols around the island, particularly over the weekend when there were several public events taking place.
On Sunday afternoon as a result of specific information received regarding the potential for violence at or around the Charity Cup football matches, members of the Police Support Unit conducted stop and search checks of vehicles along Mullet Bay Road in St. George’s.
63 individuals were stopped or searched, with 14 individuals arrested for outstanding warrants and drug offences.
Exercise Island Sentinel

This weekend a joint exercise known as ‘Island Sentinel’ involving the Bermuda Police Service, the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service and the Bermuda Regiment will take place. It is expected to start Friday evening and end Sunday morning. The Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service will be conducting live burning in the western parishes as part of the exercise. Therefore the public is advised not to panic if they see black smoke coming from that area of the island.
Arrest & Seizure of Illegal Substance

Around 6am today, Police executed a search warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act at a Southampton residence. As a result, a 43 year old Southampton man was arrested on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis (pictured), possession of a controlled drug and possession of drug equipment. In addition, the Police officers were accompanied by the Dog Warden and a pitbull was seized from the residence. This matter is currently under investigation.

A co-coordinated effort by Police resulted in the arrest of a 27 year old St. George’s man on suspicion of possessing a firearm. The arrest of Gregory Outerbridge happened around 3:45am Saturday, September 12th on York Street in St. George’s. Outerbridge was the pillion passenger on a motorcycle ridden by a 29 year old Hamilton parish man who was also arrested. That individual was subsequently bailed. A semi-automatic pistol and a quantity of controlled drugs believed to be cannabis were seized at the time of the arrests.

Burglary & Fire at Kiddie Academy

Around 7:30am today, Police received a report of a burglary & fire at Kiddie Academy on Laffan Street in Pembroke. It appears that sometime overnight an unknown culprit or culprits gained entry into the premises. A teacher entered the building Thursday morning to discover the main office ablaze as well as several items out of place. She then alerted the Police and the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service.

Around 1:35 this morning, Police responded to a report of a shooting at a Hinson Lane, Smith’s parish residence. It appears that two unknown men gained entry into a home and demanded money. This resulted in a 62 year old Smith’s parish man being shot. He was rushed to KEMH via ambulance where he is currently listed in critical condition. An investigation into this incident is underway by the Serious Crime Unit. Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the Hinson Lane/Kilderry Estate area to contact 295-0011 or the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.

The Bermuda Police Service is asking for the public’s assistance in locating 17 year old Troylene Anderson. She was most recently seen around 3pm today in the Middle Road, Warwick area (near Hayward’s Supermarket). The teenager is described as brown skinned, 5’5” tall of medium build, weighing around 160 pounds with short brown hair.
