Injury RTC

Tuesday, November 17,2009

Around 1:50pm today, Police received a report of a serious single vehicle road traffic collision resulting in injury on Pender Road in Sandys parish. It appears that the victim, a 33 year old female visitor to the island, was riding a rental cycle along Pender Road when she lost control and collided with the curb. She sustained suspected internal injuries and was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. Inquiries into this incident are underway.



Proactive Policing

Around 3:45pm today, Police attended the area of St. Monica’s Road & The Glebe Road in Pembroke. Based on information received, officers from the Public Protection Department executed a search warrant at a residence where a quantity of controlled drugs and a cache of weapons was seized, including bladed weapons & incendiary devices; however no firearms were recovered. Several arrests were also made on suspicion of firearm and or drug offences. Inquiries are ongoing.



Update - Shooting in St. David’s

Assistant Commissioner of Police Paul Wright - There have been shooting incidents on 3 consecutive weekends starting on Halloween resulting in gunshot injuries to five victims. The Bermuda Police Service is very concerned about this escalation of violence which appears to be gang related. Naturally there is also a great deal of alarm and anxiety shared by many people in our community. I want to assure everyone that reducing the violence and catching and convicting the persons responsible is a top priority for the Bermuda Police Service.



Shooting in St. David’s

Around 11:30pm Friday, Police responded to a report of gunshots outside of Southside Cinema in St. George’s. As a result, a 26 year old Pembroke man and a 24 year old Warwick woman are being treated at KEMH for gunshot wounds. Police have arrested a 28 year old Pembroke man and an 18 year old Devonshire man in connection with this matter. Police have also seized a firearm which may have been used in the incident.



Response to Meridith Case Query

The Meridith case has already been adjudicated before a court of law where a person was charged and acquitted. The Bermuda Police Service is not aware of any fresh evidence in that case; however, anyone who believes they have such evidence that would tend to implicate another individual is strongly encouraged to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 295-0011 or call the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.



Promotion to Inspector

Response to Bowen Verdict

The Bermuda Police Service has noted the public comments that have been made about the Supreme Court ruling in relation to the trial of Roger Bowen. We have received a copy of the Court ruling and have been consulting with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions about our processes.



Repeat Offender Pleads Guilty - Sentenced to 8 Years in Prison

41 year old Neville Woods of St. George’s recently appeared in Supreme Court to face charges relating to two burglaries in the St. George’s area in May of this year. He maintained his innocence regarding the burglaries but eventually pled guilty to receiving stolen property and was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment.



Task Force to Investigate Child Internet Pornography

A special task force has been established within the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) Child Victims Unit to conduct a comprehensive investigation into offences relating to child internet pornography. The task force is targeting all offenders and several persons have been identified, including a probationary Police Constable. The Bermuda Police Service takes this matter very seriously indeed and it will proactively pursue all opportunities to bring offenders to justice. The matter is currently under active investigation. A file will be prepared in due course and sent to the DPP. No further comment will be made regarding this matter at this time.



Disturbance at Fort Hamilton

Around 5pm today, Police attended a reported disturbance at Fort Hamilton. Details about what occurred are unclear; however, it appears that an altercation took place between several individuals, with one of them brandishing a bladed article. As a result, a 23 year old Devonshire man was injured. He was taken to KEMH for treatment. A car fleeing the scene collided with a wall near the junction of Happy Valley Road and King Street in Pembroke.



Update - Shooting in Middletown

Approximately 6pm Friday, November 6th Police attended a report of gunshots in the area of King Street and Middletown Lane in Pembroke. As a result, a 24 year old Pembroke man and a 31 year old Devonshire man were taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. The 31 year old Devonshire man has since been released from the hospital and the 24 year old Pembroke man remains on a general ward. Inquiries are ongoing. The Serious Crime Unit has 20 detectives investigating this incident and has adequate resources available to assist if necessary. A 26 year old Pembroke man is currently in custody in connection with this matter.



Shooting in Middletown

Around 6pm today, Police responded to a report of gunshots in the area of King Street and Middletown Lane in Pembroke. As a result, a 24 year old Pembroke man and a 31 year old Devonshire man are being treated at KEMH for gunshot wounds. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact Acting Chief Inspector Calvin Smith at the Serious Crime Unit on 295-0011. We are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who may have been in the King Street/Middletown Lane area between 4pm and 6pm Friday and saw anyone acting suspiciously.



Industrial Accident

At 4:50pm today, Police received a report of an industrial accident at a Harvey Road, Paget warehouse. It appears that the victim, a 49 year old Smith’s parish man, was working in the warehouse when he fell approximately 6 feet. The Smith’s parish man sustained head injuries and was taken to KEMH where he is currently in the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition. The Government Health & Safety Officer was informed.



Update - Shooting on Glebe Road

Around 4pm Saturday, Police responded to a report of gunshots in the Glebe Road, Pembroke area. As a result, a 21 year old Pembroke man was taken to the hospital for a gun shot wound and he is presently in satisfactory condition on a general ward at KEMH. An investigation has commenced with officers from the Serious Crime Unit and several lines of inquiry have begun.

Around 4pm today, Police responded to a report of gunshots in the Glebe Road, Pembroke area. As a result, a 21 year old Pembroke man is being treated at KEMH for gun shot wounds to his upper torso. The severity of his injuries is unknown at this time. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact Acting Chief Inspector Calvin Smith at the Serious Crime Unit on 295-0011.

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) is pleased with the Police Complaints Authority’s review of our collision statistics and the training we provide to our officers. The PCA’s review allowed them to be satisfied that the BPS takes all reasonable steps to ensure the safety of the public as it relates to police collisions.

Assault at Berkeley Institute

Around 1:50pm today, Police responded to a report of a disturbance between two male students in the upper courtyard of The Berkeley Institute. Upon Police arrival it was noted that two 16 year old boys received injuries. One received an injury to his hand and the other multiple puncture wounds to his body. Both students were taken to KEMH where they are being treated for what is being described as non-life threatening injuries. A Police investigation has commenced with officers from the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit.
