Reported Firearm Incident in Sandys parish

Police responded to an incident that took place at 9:50pm today at the junction of Middle Road and Store Lane in Sandys parish. It appears that two men on a motorcycle with dark visors approached 3 men that were outside a residence on Store Lane. Shots were fired and a 44 year old Sandys parish man was taken to the hospital for superficial wounds consistent with evasive actions. It was at first thought that the 44 year old man had been shot; however we can report no one has been shot.

At 1:30pm today, Police received a report of two boys, aged 2 and 3 years old having been pulled from the water at Kindley Field Road, St. George's near the BAS kitchen. Attempts were made to resuscitate both children at the scene by an off duty EMT. Both boys were rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital by St. John's Ambulance where the 3 year old boy died as a result of his injuries and the 2 year old is currently in the Intensive Care Unit. Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this tragic incident or anyone who may have captured the incident on any recording device e.g. camcorder or cellular device to contact Police on 295-0011.
Teenagers Injured in Assault

Around 1:37 this morning, Police received a report that a 16 year old male was dropped off at Port Royal Fire Station with multiple lacerations to his body. This was as a result of an assault that took place at a residence on Tankard Lane in Sandys parish. Details remain sketchy, but it appears that a group of individuals came to the Sandys parish residence and attacked two 16 year old males. One of the 16 year old males was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he is being treated for his injuries while the other suffered a swollen eye.
Man Injured at Riddell's Bay

Police responded to a report of a marine incident at Riddell's Bay docks in Southampton at 5:23pm today. It appears that some youth were diving off of the Riddell's Bay docks when a 19 year old man ran a distance and jumped off of the docks. As a result he struck his head on some rocks. He sustained a deep gash to his forehead, a split nose, a split lip and several lacerations to his upper body. The victim is presently in the Intensive Care Unit at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in stable condition. An investigation into this incident is underway.
Man Convicted of Money Laundering

A 58 year old Pembroke man who admitted two counts of money laundering involving tens of thousands of dollars has been jailed. Cordell Simmons pled guilty in Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Thursday, June 24th) to wiring nearly $80,000 to accounts in Jamaica and the U.S.
He made dozens of transfers for amounts of up to $3,000 at a time through Western Union and MoneyGram between June 2008 and November 2009. The 58 year old is the third person to come before the courts in Bermuda for money laundering.

Police responded to reports of gunshots being fired in the area of Friswells Hill and Middle Terrace in Devonshire at 10:48pm Wednesday. Upon Police arrival it was ascertained that two men, a 16 year old Pembroke man and a 22 year old Pembroke man, were shot. Both men were taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Officers from various units are on scene and an investigation into the matter has commenced.

Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro, Officer In Charge of the Serious Crime Unit - Detectives from the Serious Crime Unit are continuing their enquiries into the brutal murder of Mr. Freddy Maybury at Woody’s Drive Inn on Monday 14th June, 2010. The two men arrested initially following the incident have been released on Police bail.
Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses or persons with information to come forward and provide any helpful information. The enquiry has entered its second full day. Detectives have conducted witness interviews, house to house enquiries and seized evidence from the scene, including CCTV from nearby locations and Woody’s itself. This evidence is being reviewed, and where appropriate evidence will be sent overseas for processing.

The murder of Mr. Maybury represents the 6th death caused by gunfire in Bermuda this year (2010), while an additional 12 persons have been injured. (2009 = 4 people killed by gunfire & 13 people injured).
I acknowledge and share the concern felt throughout our community about the current frequency of gun crime. Police responded to reports of gun shots fired at Woody's Restaurant on Malabar Road in Sandys parish at 12:35am today. Upon Police arrival it was ascertained that a 34 year old Sandys parish man was outside of Woody's Restaurant when he was shot. As a result, he was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he died as a result of his injuries. No further information will be given until the next of kin has been notified. An investigation into this incident is underway.

A motorcyclist critically injured in a serious single vehicle road traffic collision that occurred around 3:30am Saturday, June 5th on Crow Lane (East Broadway) in Paget near the junction with Corkscrew Hill has succumbed to her injuries. The 28 year old Pembroke woman was pronounced dead at 12:30am today by an on call physician at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. No further information will be released until the next of kin have been notified.

Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro, Officer In Charge of the Serious Crime Unit - The Bermuda Police Service can confirm that Mr. Jahmel Glen Blakeney has been arrested in New York, USA, on charges of Attempted Murder and Firearms offences that occurred in Bermuda.
The arrest is in relation to the attempted murder of Ms. Renee Kuchler and Mr. Shaki Minors, who were shot multiple times as they left a movie cinema at Southside, St. George’s on Friday 13th November, 2009. Mr. Blakeney was arrested at the time of the offence and later bailed while forensic evidence was processed.

On Saturday 5th June the Commissioner of Police attended a joint panel discussion at the Devonshire Seventh-day Adventist Church. The panel was invited as part of the church's summit on Community Violence. At 3:30am today, first responders attended a reported serious single vehicle collision resulting in injury on East Broadway in the area of Corkscrew Hill. It appears that a 28 year old woman was riding a motorcycle on that said road when she lost control. As a result, she was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where she is listed in critical condition. Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is asked to contact Police on 295-0011.
First Deployment of Taser

Around 4:10pm on Saturday, a Police officer used a Taser to assist in subduing a 45 year old Devonshire man who violently resisted arrest on Middle Road in Devonshire. A court appearance for the Devonshire man is anticipated in due course.
This is the first deployment of Taser by the Bermuda Police Service. As a precaution, we have reviewed the use of Taser and can report that all the protocols in place regarding the use of the device were followed, including aftercare which was given to the affected individual.

Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro, Officer In Charge of the Serious Crime Unit - The Bermuda Police Service can confirm that 25 year old Antonio Myers of Pembroke appeared in Hamilton Magistrates Court today, charged with the murder of Kumi Harford.
Members of the public will recall that at 5am on 5th December 2009, Mr. Harford was shot multiple times as he drove in his car on Mission Lane, just off St. Monica’s Road, Pembroke.
Man Arrested in Connection with Martin Murder

Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of 24 year old Dekimo Martin in the early hours of Friday, May 28th in Sandys parish. No further information will be released at this time regarding the arrest.
The investigating team is continuing to appeal for witnesses; in particular any area residents or anyone that was in the vicinity of Woodlawn Road, Butterfield Lane, & Peacock Crescent - that may have seen or heard anything related to this incident – however irrelevant it may seem. Around 2:40am today, Police and first responders attended a reported collision between a BELCO truck and a motorcycle on Middle Road in Paget in the area of the Paget Shell gas station. As a result the motorcyclist, a 27 year old man, was rushed to KEMH via ambulance where he later died of his injuries. No further information will be given until the next of kin has been notified. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to contact the Roads Policing Unit on 295-0011. This marks the 6th road fatality for 2010.

Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Antoine Daniels - The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 24 year old Dekimo Martin of Sandys Parish. He was pronounced dead at 1:45am today by an on duty physician at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
Police are treating the cause of death as murder due to the nature of the injuries and a forensic pathologist will arrive on island in the coming days to provide a confirmed cause of death. The investigation is being led by Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro, who is the officer in charge of the Serious Crime Unit.

Police responded to a report of gunshots being fired in the Peacock Crescent, Sandys parish area at 1:07am today. As a result, a 24 year old Sandys parish man was taken to KEMH where he later died as a result of his injuries. A full investigation has commenced and no further information will be given until the next of kin has been notified. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact the independent 24 hour confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477.
