Thursday, July 22,2010
Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva - There were 1,067 offences in Q2 2010 making it the 2nd lowest quarterly crime figure since Q1 2000. It is also so exceptionally low that it is statistically significant in comparison to the previous 5 and the 10 year period. The high levels of Crimes Against The Person continue to be of concern, particularly the 4 murders in Q2 2010. Firearms incidents are also at an all time high. Police activity including arrests, calls for service, stop and searches and drug arrests on the street are at all time highs, suggesting that a focus on proactive policing and a reorganisation of the BPS to ensure maximum numbers of officers on the streets is delivering results.
