2010 Year End Crime Statistics

In 2010 there were 7 people killed and 29 people injured though the use of firearms. This represents a significant increase over 2009 which recorded 4 and 13 respectively. Across all other areas, crime is at its lowest point in the last decade. Significant resources and several strategies were deployed in 2010 to target gun, gang and drug offences as the primary objectives for the police and the community.



Vessels Intercepted, Suspected Drugs Seized & Arrests Made

Police officers have intercepted two vessels this morning during a marine operation, one being the Carefree IV. As a result five individuals have been arrested, including the two man crew of the Carefree IV and a significant quantity of suspected drugs has been seized. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.



Recruit Foundation Course #73 Charity Fundraiser

The student officers of Recruit Foundation Course #73 will be conducting two charity car washes on Saturday 22nd January and Saturday 29th January 2011 respectively. On Saturday, 22nd January a car wash will be held at the Paget Shell Service Station located at the junction of Middle Road & Valley Road in Paget, between 9am and 2pm. On Saturday, 29th January a car wash will be held at the Crawl Hill Esso Service Station located at the junction of North Shore Road & Radnor Road in Hamilton parish, between 9am and 2pm.



Sudden Death of the Deputy Governor’s Wife

Around 8:40pm on Wednesday, January 19th 2011 Police attended a report of a sudden death at a Devonshire residence. The deceased has been identified as 42 year old Melissa Arkley, wife of Deputy Governor David Arkley. There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances. An autopsy will be performed in due course.



Imprisonment & Substantial Fine for Violently Resisting Arrest, Drug Offences

24 year old Kenneth Tucker-Thompson appeared in Magistrates’ Court on Monday, January 17th 2011 and pled guilty to four charges. Violently Resisting Arrest. Possession of Cannabis in an increased penalty zone. Possession of Cannabis Resin with intent to supply in an increased penalty zone. Possession of Ecstasy (MDMA) with intent to supply.



Quincy Brangman Sentenced to 25 Years Imprisonment for Attempted Murder

Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr. Antoine Daniels, Serious Crime & Intelligence Divisions - The Bermuda Police Service takes this opportunity to acknowledge the substantial sentence handed down today in the Supreme Court to Mr. Quincy Brangman. Mr. Brangman was convicted of attempting to murder a 24 year old resident in Sandys Parish, during the early morning hours of February 13th, 2010. The victim was shot at point-blank range and although seriously injured has recovered well from his physical injuries and has cooperated with the police throughout the case. This cooperation has led to the sentence handed down today.



2011 KPMG Invitational Mile Traffic Advisories

In connection with the staging of the KPMG Invitational Mile running races and a musical display by the Bermuda Regiment Band and the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band being held on Friday 14th January 2011, the following traffic restrictions will be in effect in the City of Hamilton. Roads Closed Front Street - Between Queen Street and Parliament Street will be closed to all vehicular traffic from 6:00 p.m. and will re-open at 10:00 p.m.



Promotions to Inspector & Sergeant

At 4:30pm on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 a promotion ceremony took place at the Police Recreation Club, Police Headquarters, Prospect Devonshire where 12 officers were promoted - five to the rank of Inspector and seven to the rank of Sergeant. In attendance were the Minister of National Security Lt. Col. David Burch, Commissioner Michael DeSilva, Deputy Commissioner Mike Jackman, Assistant Commissioner Paul Wright and Assistant Commissioner David Mirfield as well as the colleagues, family & friends of the officers being promoted. Firearm, Drugs Seized & Man Arrested

Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro, Officer in Charge of the Serious Crime Unit - The Bermuda Police Service can confirm the arrest of a 28 year old male from Pembroke Parish for Firearms & Drugs offences. Police firearms officers executed a search warrant at a Pembroke residence during the evening of Saturday 8th January, 2011. The investigation is being led by the Serious Crime & Drugs Units of the Bermuda Police Service.



Sudden Death

Monday, January 10,2011

Police responded to an incident that took place today at 11:13am in Warwick. Upon police arrival it was ascertained that a 19 year old man was found in a non responsive state outside a residence on Rockland Crescent in Warwick. No further information will be given until the next of kin has been notified. Active inquiries into this incident are underway and foul play has not been ruled out.



Reported Firearm Incident in Warwick

At 12:13pm today, Police responded to a report of gunshots outside Hayward's on Middle Road in Warwick. A short time later, a vehicle of interest in the inquiry failed to stop for Police on Cedar Hill and was involved in a collision with a Police vehicle. There are no reported injuries at this time and a 26 year old man was arrested. Active inquiries into both incidents are underway and any witnesses are urged to contact Police on 295-0011 or the independent confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477.



Damage Only RTC

At 12:17pm today, Police responded to a road traffic collision that took place at the junction of South Road and Lovers Lane in Paget. It appears that one vehicle was exiting Lovers Lane and another was traveling along South Road when they collided. As a result one car ended up on a wall on Lovers Lane. No one was injured but both vehicles were extensively damaged. An investigation into this incident is underway.



Injury RTC – Police Vehicle

Police were on mobile patrol around 3:35am Saturday January 1st 2011, when they attempted to stop a man riding a motorcycle with a  passenger, traveling at a high rate of speed on Angle Street. Officers followed the vehicle, however the cyclist continued at a high rate of speed, failing to come to a stop at the stop sign at the junction of Court and Angle Streets.  This resulted in the motorcycle colliding with another police vehicle that was traveling south on Court Street.



Policing for New Year's Eve

Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Martin Weekes & Superintendent James Howard - This year we are pleased to report that the Christmas period passed with few incidents of violence and we wish to thank the public for their support. The Bermuda Police Service, assisted by the Bermuda Reserve Police, deployed extra crime prevention patrols throughout the long holiday weekend and whilst there were some incidents of public order they were swiftly and robustly dealt with. Significant attention was also focused on Bermuda's roads during the Christmas weekend to make Bermuda safer. A total of eleven persons were arrested on suspicion of impaired driving during the period.



One Man Crime Spree

Kevin Davis, was taken to court yesterday for a number of burglaries that have been happening around the island for the past few weeks. As a result he was convicted of 5 counts of burglary with 6 counts taken into consideration (TIC). What does 'offences taken into consideration' mean? The court may take other offences into consideration when they pass sentence.



Sudden Death

Police and first responders attended a medical emergency at Scott's Hill Road in Sandys a few minutes after 11 this morning. Upon police arrival it was ascertained that a 20 year old Sandys man was in a non-responsive state. The Sandys man was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was certified dead by a hospital physician. No further information will be given until the next of kin has been notified. Foul play is not suspected.



Serious Injury RTC

Police responded to a road traffic collision which occurred on Monday, December 27th around 2:32am at the junction of Harbour Road and Manse Road in Paget. It appears that a car with three male occupants collided with a wall. Two of the three were injured; one of the injured has been flown overseas for further medical treatment, the other received superficial cuts and bruises. However, the driver of the vehicle was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst impaired. Inquiries into this incident are underway.



Bermuda’s 13th Road Traffic Fatality

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 24 year old Leaha Lanfear. Ms. Lanfear was pronounced dead at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore Maryland on Tuesday December 21, 2010. She succumbed to injuries sustained in a serious road traffic collision that occurred around 3:55am Thursday, December 16 on East Broadway (Crow Lane) near the junction with Corkscrew Hill. The Bermuda Police Service extends condolences to the family and friends of Ms Lanfear. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing.



Christmas 2010 Holiday Crime Prevention Advisory

At Home - Always lock your doors and windows when leaving your house, even for a few minutes. If you leave home for an extended period of time, ask a neighbour or family member to watch the house and collect any deliveries. Displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through your windows or doors. Strangers At Your Door - Be aware that criminals sometimes pose as couriers or persons soliciting donations for charitable causes. Always ask for identification and ask how the donated funds will be used. If you are not satisfied, do not donate. Only donate to recognised charitable organisations.



Fatal RTC

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 60 year old Gladwin Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert was pronounced dead at 11am on Tuesday, December 14th 2010 in the Intensive Care Unit of the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. He succumbed to injuries sustained in a serious road traffic collision that occurred around 10:20am Friday, December 10th on Parsons Road in Pembroke when the pedal cycle he was riding was in collision with a motorcycle ridden by a 59 year old Devonshire woman.
