Robbery at Flatts Service Station

Around 6:55pm on Tuesday, January 3rd police responded to a reported robbery at Flatts Service Station on North Shore Road in Hamilton parish. It appears that an unknown man entered the premises brandishing a bladed article and escaped on foot heading east with a quantity of cash. No one was injured.



Arrests Made In Connection With Devonshire Incident

Around 3:25pm on Tuesday, January 3rd police responded to a reported incident at a Long Ridge Pass, Devonshire residence. It appears that two men on motorcycles arrived at the home and one of the men gained entry, brandishing what appeared to be a firearm, while the other waited outside. The intruder briefly confronted a female occupant before leaving the premises. Both suspects left the area on separate motorcycles. No one was injured. Two persons of interest were subsequently arrested in connection with this incident.



Investigations into Recent Shootings Ongoing

The 24 year old gunshot victim that suffered serious injuries after a shooting outside Gravity Nightclub on North Shore Road in Devonshire during the early morning hours of Saturday, 17th December 2011 remains overseas receiving specialised treatment. Forensic evidence obtained from that scene has been sent overseas for analysis and detectives are working with key witnesses to progress the case.

There was of course one serious incidence of robbery in the western area which the Bermuda Police Service is actively following up and for which I reiterate our request for witnesses.



Update: Hitching Post Robbery

Acting Chief Inspector Mark Clarke - Detectives from the Somerset Criminal Investigations Unit continue to investigate the robbery of a local business located at the ‘Hitching Post’ on Middle Road, Sandys about 8:15am on Wednesday 28th December. Investigations have revealed that four men targeted a cash delivery van; the guards on the van were ambushed by the suspects, some of whom were brandishing firearms. They forced the guards to get the business operators at the location to open the door, where they were able to steal a quantity of cash in bags.



Robbery at Hitching Post in Somerset

Around 8:30am on Wednesday, December 28th police attended a reported robbery at the Hitching Post on Middle Road in Sandys parish. It appears that around 8:10am an unknown group of men gained entry into the premises, brandishing what appeared to be firearms. The culprits made good their escape with a quantity of cash. No one was injured.



Sudden Death

Around 11:45am on Saturday, December 24th police responded to a reported industrial accident at a Smiths Avenue, Warwick residence. It appears that a landscaper was carrying out work on the property when he received an electrical shock. On police arrival EMTs were already at the scene performing CPR on the victim, an 18 year old Pembroke man. The victim was then taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance, where he was subsequently pronounced dead at 1:20pm by an on call physician. There does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances; however an autopsy is anticipated and inquiries are ongoing.



Two Men Arrested Following East Avenue Shooting

Detectives from the Serious Crime Unit continue to investigate the shooting of a 38 year old man outside his residence on East Avenue, Southampton – during the early hours of the evening on Wednesday 21st December. Two men have been taken into custody regarding this matter – a 26 year old male from Pembroke, and a 22 year old male from Paget parish. These men remain in police custody.



Remembering Former Detective Inspector Milton Marsh CPM

Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva - On behalf of the officers and staff of The Bermuda Police Service I extend sincere condolences to the family of former Detective Inspector Milton Marsh. I had the pleasure to meet Inspector Marsh on his 102nd birthday in February this year as well as some members of his family. I noted how sharp his memory was of his policing career and it was interesting to hear him relate his experiences.



Shooting on East Avenue in Southampton

Around 7:05pm on Wednesday, December 21st police received a report of a shooting at an East Avenue, Southampton residence. A 38 year old Southampton man was injured as a result and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment. The victim’s injuries are not considered life threatening at this time.



Rest Homes Receive Serious Crime Unit Donations

This year, the officers in the Serious Crime Unit decided to forego giving and receiving gifts at Christmas time. Instead, support staff member Ms. Monique Heyliger identified two worthy causes for some Christmas charity – the Lorraine Rest Home in Warwick, and the Francis Telford Nursing Home in Paget. She worked tirelessly to obtain the monies, prepare the packages, and wrap them up in advance of the donations. Donations were collected amongst the detectives in the unit, for a total of over $700, in order to provide the residents of these two homes with towels, soaps, wash cloths, bed sheets and other essential items for everyday living.



Shooting Victim Airlifted Overseas

The 24 year old gunshot victim injured in the shooting incident outside Gravity Nightclub – North Shore Road, Devonshire in the early hours of Saturday morning – has been airlifted to the United States for specialist surgery. The young man suffered serious injuries when he was shot multiple times sometime between 3:15am & 3:25am. Detectives are continuing their investigations into this matter. A number of witnesses have been interviewed and the scene has been forensically examined.



Robbery at Henry VIII Pantry

Around 7:05pm on Monday, December 19th police responded to a reported robbery at Henry VIII Pantry on South Road in Southampton. It appears that an unknown man entered the premises and brandished what is believed to be a firearm. At the time only staff was present in the store. The culprit took a quantity of cash before reportedly making good his escape with an accomplice who was waiting outside. It is believed that both men fled on foot. No one was injured.



Update: Shooting on North Shore Road in Devonshire

The Serious Crime Unit is investigating the circumstances where a 24 year old Pembroke man was shot multiple times outside the Gravity nightclub, on North Shore Road, Devonshire. The victim suffered injuries to his back, shoulder and arms, and they are considered serious. The shooting occurred sometime between 3:15am and 3:20am Saturday, December 17th. Investigators have examined the identified crime scene for evidence, and are speaking with area residents and other witnesses.

Around 3:25am on Saturday, December 17th police received reports of gunshots in the North Shore Road, Devonshire area. Officers immediately responded to the scene outside Gravity nightclub near Loyal Hill Pass and found a 24 year old man injured as a result. He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance. The severity of the victim’s injuries is unknown at this time. The scene was cordoned off and a full investigation commenced. Traffic was also diverted away from the area but that section of North Shore Road has now been re-opened.



Clearwater Middle School Students Wash Police Vehicles

Between 1:30pm and 3:30pm today, Friday December 16th, students from Clearwater Middle School washed police vehicles at Southside Police Station. The six M3 students were joined by their teacher Ms. Jannelle White who organised the activity as a way to show their appreciation and give back to the police during the holiday season. Police Investigate Gunshot Reports

Around 11pm on Saturday, December 10th two unknown men on a motorcycle were traveling through the Somerset Road, Cambridge Road Sandys parish area when the pillion passenger discharged a firearm in the direction of a group of men standing outside Long Hours Variety store. Police were on mobile patrol in the vicinity and immediately pursued the suspects who made good their escape traveling east along Somerset Road. The scene was cordoned off and forensic evidence found suggested that a firearm had been discharged; however no one has reported being injured.



MV Guardian Decked Out For Christmas Boat Parade

On Saturday, Decmeber 10th the 2011 Christmas Boat Parade took place in Hamilton harbour with over 70 vessels taking part, including the police boat MV Guardian. Decorated with lights, a Christmas tree, a T3 Motion vehicle and Santa waving from the Birdcage, the MV Guardian was all decked out in the festive spirit thanks to the Marine Unit.



Successful Southside Police Station Community Awareness Day

Investigation into Reported Shooting Incident

The Bermuda Police Service Serious Crime Unit is investigating a reported shooting incident outside the Western Stars (Dandy Town) Football Club in Pembroke. The incident occurred at about 8:45pm Thursday 8th December, 2011. No one was injured in the incident, however it is believed a firearm was discharged from Bakery Lane into the grounds of Western Stars Club by a gunman on a motorcycle. The gunman then entered St. John’s Road and travelled west on that road.
