Witness Appeal: Reported Serious Assault & Robbery

The Bermuda Police Service Serious Crime Unit is investigating a serious assault on and robbery of a 33 year old male. This incident occurred about 12:30am on Wednesday 19th September, 2012 at the Beach Bar & Bistro, located at #103 Front Street. The victim was socializing with friends when he was set upon by a group of men who assaulted him and robbed him of jewelry around his neck. The victim suffered a fractured jaw on both sides of his face. As a result he underwent surgery to repair the injuries at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.



Investigation Into The Murder of Lorenzo Stovell

Superintendent James Howard - On behalf of the Bermuda Police Service, I wish to begin by expressing sincere condolences to the family and friends of 24 year old Pembroke resident, Mr. Lorenzo Stovell who tragically lost his life on Sunday evening.  The murder of Mr. Stovell represents the 3rd death caused by the use of a firearm in Bermuda this year. Four persons have been shot and injured (and not died) in 2012. The Bermuda Police Service recognizes that this incident will undoubtedly impact the local community. We want to reassure the community that the Bermuda Police Service will use all the resources at its disposal to bring the offender or offenders to justice.



24 Year Old Man Fatally Shot in Sandys Parish

Assistant Commissioner of Police David Mirfield – At 11:40pm on Sunday, September 23rd a shooting occurred outside Woody’s Bar on Malabar Road in Sandys parish, in a bus layby. As a result, a 24 year old man was shot and later succumbed to his injuries. The victim was taken from the scene by private transport to Port Royal Fire Station, where he was examined by an on call doctor and pronounced dead at that location. As such, a murder investigation has been commenced by the Serious Crime Unit.



Supreme Court: Trio Plead Guilty to Armed Burglary

The Bermuda Police Service acknowledges the guilty pleas of Raymond Kidd, Tristan Burgess and Olicie Morgan in Supreme Court earlier today. Puisne Carlisle Greaves accepted the trio’s guilty pleas regarding the men being responsible for committing a series of offences, including aggravated burglary while armed with a firearm, serious sexual assault, assault with intent to commit robbery and the taking of two motor cycles without consent of the owners. These offences all occurred during the month of March this year.



Update: Eighth Road Fatality for 2012

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 45 year old Aaron Smith of St. George’s. Around 2:20pm on Tuesday, September 18th Mr. Smith was riding a motorcycle along North Shore Road in Devonshire near the junction with Cable Hill when a collision occurred with a car at the entrance of Terceira's gas station.



Eighth Road Fatality for 2012

Around 2:20pm on Tuesday, September 18th police and first responders were dispatched to a reported serious collision on North Shore Road in Devonshire near the junction with Cable Hill. It appears that a motorcycle and a car were traveling along North Shore Road when they collided at the entrance of Terceira's gas station. The motorcycle rider, a 45 year old St. George's man, was seriously injured as a result and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance where he later succumbed to his injuries. At this time, it does not appear that the occupants of the car were injured.



Investigation Ongoing: Friswells Road Vehicle Fire

Around 6:20am on Monday, September 17th police and Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service personnel attended a reported vehicle fire on Friswells Road in Devonshire. A white Suzuki car was damaged as a result. The fire is being treated as suspicious and police and Fire Service investigations are ongoing. House-to-house enquiries have been carried out and several items have been seized for forensic examination. Officers from the Bermuda Police Service Police Support Unit and Community Action Team have been patrolling the general area to provide community reassurance and support



Update: Confirmed Firearm Incident at Woody’s Drive In

Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro, Officer in Charge of the Serious Crime Unit - The Bermuda Police Service Serious Crimes Unit continues their investigation into what appears to be a man brandishing a large automatic firearm (“machine” gun type weapon) and attempting to discharge into a crowd of persons in attendance at Woody’s Bar in Sandys Parish. This is alleged to have occurred about 10pm on Saturday 25th August, 2012. The image below will hopefully assist in refreshing the memories of witnesses and members of the public about the possible identity of the suspect in this particular case.

Condolences on the Untimely Death of Major Chris Wheddon

Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva - On behalf of my senior colleagues and all officers and staff of the Bermuda Police Service, I offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Major Chris Wheddon. Major Wheddon joined the Bermuda Police Service in February 1997 and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2003. He served a portion of his career in our Information and Management Services (IMS) department, working on computer systems. He ended his service as a police officer in March 2005 and joined the Bermuda Regiment on a full time basis.



Section 110A: White Hill, Sandys Parish Area

Acting Chief Inspector Robert Cardwell, Western Area Commander - Good morning, I am today announcing that the Bermuda Police Service will once again exercise powers under the Criminal Code Amendment Act 2010, Section 110 and specifically the power to disperse groups. The initial duration of this authority shall be between 8am on Saturday, 8th September until 11:59pm on Friday, 21st September, 2012. Under the powers under this section of law officers have been authorized to exercise these powers in the general area known as White Hill in Sandys Parish to curb the anti-social behavior that is exhibited in this community. More specifically this will be in the areas of: Middle Road between Spring Benny Road and Farmstead Lane; Spring Benny Lane, Spring Benny Drive, Spring Benny Road, White Hill View, Rockywold Drive, Rockywold Road, Butterfield Lane, Woodlawn Road, Fairhaven Lane, White Hill Lane, Farmstead Lane and any public place contiguous to any of these roads. A map clearly indicating the areas this community can expect the police to be exercising these powers will be published in both newspapers together with the notice tomorrow.



Ninth Annual Hurricane Fabian Memorial

Today at 2pm, the ninth anniversary of Hurricane Fabian and the four lives lost during the storm was commemorated at the Memorial Bench in Kindley Field Park, St. George’s. The Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva, Deputy Commissioner Mike Jackman and Assistant Commissioner Antoine Daniels along with various colleagues and friends, gathered in tribute to mark the occasion. Following a brief acknowledgement of the tragic circumstances and a moment of silence, the lives of those lost were fondly remembered with flowers thrown into the ocean. [Commissioner DeSilva & Station Duty Officer Linda Mienzer pay their respects] Prior to today’s event the Ninth Annual Remembrance Ride took place on Sunday, September 2nd, honouring the three police employees and a civilian who lost their lives. The Commissioner of Police was also in attendance at that event, as well as Assistant Commissioner Paul Wright, Superintendent Martin Weekes, former Commissioner of Police Senator Jonathan Smith (President of the September 5th Foundation), Inspector Craig Morfitt (Vice President of the September 5th Foundation) and former police constable Jeff Baron (Director of the September 5th Foundation), who joined the victims’ colleagues, family and friends for the event. Investigation Ongoing Into Woody’s Incident

All four persons arrested in connection with the Saturday, August 25th incident at Woody’s have been released on police bail pending further inquiries. No weapon has been recovered, and there has been limited assistance from the public so far. However, investigations are ongoing as we continue to build the evidence and process the forensic evidence gleaned. The Bermuda Police Service continues to appeal for anyone with any information regarding this matter to contact the independent & confidential Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-8477 or the Serious Crime Unit on 247-1739.



Reported Serious Three Vehicle Collision in Warwick

Around 10:20pm on Thursday, August 30th police and first responders attended a reported serious three vehicle collision on Middle Road in Warwick near the junction with Longford Road. A car and two motorcycles were involved in the collision, with the driver of the car and the riders of both motorcycles injured as a result. There were no other injuries reported. All three victims were taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment; however the full extent of their injuries is not known at this time. Inquiries into this collision are ongoing and any witnesses are encouraged to contact the main police number on 295-0011.



Unconfirmed Firearm Incident: Woody’s Drive In, 25th August 2012

Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro, Officer In Charge of the Serious Crime Unit - The Bermuda Police Service is continuing its investigations into the appearance of a man carrying what appears to be a firearm outside the popular Somerset bar & restaurant known as Woody’s Drive In. We are taking the unusual step today of releasing CCTV footage of the incident in the hope that we can identify the man. The circumstances of this matter have prompted us to undertake an intense investigation, and we need the assistance of the community.



Misleading Internet Photo Circulating

The Bermuda Police Service is aware of a misleading photo which is circulating locally via social media. The photo shows a police car, rumoured to be a Bermuda Police Service vehicle, with two bullet holes in one of its windows. The Bermuda Police Service wishes to clarify that this is a photograph taken off the internet. It shows the car that was being driven by a UK police officer in North East England when he was shot and injured in July 2010. Of the three suspects involved in the shooting, one took his own life before arrest and the other two received life sentences on conviction of attempted murder.



Alleged Firearm Incident in Sandys Parish

Police are currently investigating an alleged firearm incident that took place around 10:15pm on Saturday, August 25th in the vicinity of Woody's Bar & Restaurant in Sandys parish. There were no reported injuries. Detectives are interested in speaking with anyone who was at the Sandys establishment on Saturday night or anyone with any information regarding the alleged incident. Anyone who can assist with inquiries into this matter is encouraged to contact the Somerset Criminal Investigation Unit on 234-1010 or the confidential and anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.



Man Arrested After Reported Burglary at Court Street Store

A few minutes after 7:00pm today, police responded to a report of a burglary that took place at a business on Court Street. Police were in the area and saw the suspect. A chase ensued and the suspect made his way to the corner of King and Dundonald Streets where he jumped on the roof of a nearby building. Police surrounded the building however the man jumped off the building, resulting in the man falling on his face. A struggle commenced and the suspect was tasered by police.



Two Men Rescued After Marine Incident

At approximately 5:35pm today marine police were dispatched to a report of an 18 foot fishing boat that capsized just off Devonshire Bay. Two males aged 40 and 60 were assisted to the shore and both appear to be fine. In the abundance of caution both men were taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where they are being treated for non-life threatening injures. The fishing boat was severely damaged and has sunk. Marine police are advising the maritime community to exercise caution when going out on the water as we are expecting very rough and unpredictable waters for the next few days.



Update: Sudden Death

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 23 year old Alexander Gosselin, a guest worker from Canada, who died after being found in a non-responsive state at a residence on Morgan’s Hill in Sandys at 12:26pm Friday afternoon. It appears that a resident of the house entered and found Mr. Gosselin in a collapsed state in a room in the dwelling. An on call doctor attended the residence and pronounced him dead at 1:15pm Friday. Foul play is not suspected and the Bermuda Police Service extends our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
