Acting Superintendent Calvin Smith – Good Afternoon, I am Acting Superintendent Calvin Smith. Today we are here to bring attention to holiday shopping safety tips for the community. As of tomorrow Thursday, November 27th the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. signifies the unofficial start to the holiday shopping season and we are all aware of the shopping frenzy that takes place around ‘Black Friday’ in Bermuda.
The Bermuda Police Service believes that it is important that the community and shoppers specifically do what it takes to keep themselves safe.
Reported Armed Robbery at Mr. Chicken in Southampton

The Bermuda Police Service responded to a report of an armed robbery that took place tonight (Tuesday) at 9:50pm at Mr. Chicken Restaurant located in the Heron Bay Plaza next to Marketplace in Southampton.
It appears that a male, around 6'1" tall wearing dark clothing came into the restaurant, brandished what is believed to be a firearm and made demands of money while a second male stayed outside on a motorcycle. The first male was given an undisclosed amount of cash.

Acting Assistant Commissioner James Howard - Just over a week ago I stood in front of the media and public of Bermuda and made a pledge that the Bermuda Police Service would do everything in our power to bring the perpetrators of shootings that took place on Remembrance Day to justice.
To date, a 29 year old Sandys parish man has been placed before the courts and we are following up other significant lines of enquiry.

The inaugural Commissioner’s Vision Awards ceremony, sponsored by Bermuda Cablevision, was held at 6pm Wednesday, November 19th in the Berkeley Institute cafetorium to officially acknowledge a total of 150 students for their leadership qualities.
Five awardees were nominated by each of the participating public as well as private primary, middle and senior schools for exemplifying the Bermuda Police Service core values of Professionalism, Integrity, Respect, Accountability, Dedication, Courage and Unity.

Once again the Bermuda Police Service would like to remind members of the public to remain vigilant regarding phone calls, e-mails and other correspondence from unknown persons that attempt to obtain personal information or other sensitive data.
One common scam involves unknown callers offering to help residents with alleged glitches reportedly affecting their home computers.
Police Encourage Motorcycle Owners & Buyers to be Vigilant

Inspector Robert Cardwell, Officer in Charge of the Roads Policing Unit - The Bermuda Police Service continues to regularly record incidents where motorcycles are reported to have been ‘taken without the owner’s consent’ – referred to as TWOC.
To date there have been 728 such reports compared to 599 at the same time last year.
Cash Stolen From Laundrette in Sandys Parish

At 2:55pm today, police attended an incident that took place at Launderette in the plaza adjacent to The Market Place in Sandys parish. It appears that two individuals entered the premises, made demands of money and escaped with an unknown quantity of cash.
Police have now commenced an investigation into the incident and we are appealing for anyone who may have seen individuals in the area, particularly The Market Place, Dollar Depot area acting suspiciously, to contact police on 295-0011 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477.
Three Arrested After Confirmed Firearm Incident in Mount Hill, Pembroke Area

Police responded to a report of a confirmed firearm incident that took place at 4:25pm in the Mount Hill, Pembroke area. It does not appear that anyone was injured and an investigation into this incident has commenced.
Three people were subsequently arrested in connection with this matter.Police are keen to speak with anyone who may have seen persons acting suspiciously in the Mount Hill, Pembroke area.
Remembrance Day Shooting Incidents in Devonshire & Sandys Parishes

Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police James Howard (Crime Division) & Acting Detective Chief Inspector Dave Greenidge (Officer in Charge of the Serious Crime Unit) - The shooting incidents that took place yesterday on Remembrance Day in Devonshire and Sandys Parish caused serious injury to four people and could easily have injured or killed more.
The public is quite rightly outraged at the callous actions of the criminals involved in firing bullets into groups of innocent people, with reckless disregard for those who might be killed or injured.
Four Men Shot & Injured in Sandys Parish

Around 7:10pm on Tuesday November 11th, police and first responders attended a report of gunshots in the area of Somerset Cricket Club in Sandys.
Four men were injured and conveyed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance and their conditions at this juncture are unknown.
Witnesses or anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the main police telephone number at 295-0011, or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.
Marine Death of Dr. Neil Burnie

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 60 year old Dr. Neil Burnie of Smith's parish and extends condolences to his family and friends. Police and other first responders attended a report of a marine incident that took place today a few minutes after 11am in the waters off of Horseshoe Bay beach.
Details are sketchy, but it appears that Dr. Burnie ran into difficulty whilst scuba diving, resulting in Marine Police and Harbour Radio being notified.

The Bermuda Police Service would like to thank the public for their cooperation during the Halloween weekend. While there were a few reported incidents involving the throwing of objects, mostly eggs, there were no reported injuries and minimal damage caused.
Negative behavior on Halloween continues to steadily decrease each year and the community as well as our community partners are to be commended for working with the police to create a positive, proactive atmosphere with a zero tolerance approach regarding anti-social behavior.
Police Continue to Seek Rightful Owners of Impounded Vehicles

Inspector Robert Cardwell, Officer Responsible for Roads Policing - The Police Service has a number of motorcycles and other vehicles in their possession. Members of the public are encouraged to review the list of registration numbers to identify any vehicle that may belong to them.
These vehicles are a combination of recovered reported stolen vehicles and the registered owner is not contactable or has left the island; vehicles taken from collision scenes for safe keeping and have not been collected or the owner has not given the police written permission to dispose of it and vehicles that are not registered such as motor-cross motorcycles and pedal cycles.

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 51 year old Wayne Dears of Hamilton parish and extends condolences to his family and friends.
Mr. Dears was seriously injured in a reported single vehicle motorcycle collision that occurred around 12:10am Thursday, October 16th on South Road in Devonshire near the junction with Tee Street.

First and foremost we want those participating in Halloween activities to be safe. Motorists are advised to slow down to help keep the roads calmer, particularly when traveling through neighbourhoods.
Governor Thanks BPS For Hurricane Gonzalo Efforts

At 2pm today, His Excellency the Governor George Fergusson visited Hamilton Police Station to express his sincere thanks to police officers for their efforts during Hurricane Gonzalo.
In the Governor’s brief remarks to a room full of officers, he commended those who were on duty during the hurricane for providing a valuable service to the community, while also recognising the officers’ families for their support.
Death of Retired Reserve Police Commandant Eugene Vickers MBE CPM

The Commissioner of Police Mr. Michael DeSilva expressed sadness today upon learning of the passing of Mr. Eugene Vickers, retired Commandant of the Bermuda Reserve Police (BRP). Mr. Vickers died on Saturday afternoon in hospital overseas. His career began with the Reserve Constabulary, as it was known then, in 1964. He helped to lead the organisation through a series of modernisation changes in the late 1990s including a change in name, a change in uniform to match their full-time colleagues and a change in training to facilitate wider deployment of Reserve Officers across a fuller spectrum of general police duties.
Eleventh Road Fatality for 2014: Winston Jones

Police can now confirm the death of 49 year old Winston Jones who died after the motorcycle he was riding collided with another motorcycle on Court Street in the City of Hamilton near the junction with Reid Street around 12:30pm on Saturday October 18th.
His passing marks the 11th road fatality for 2014. A family liaison officer has been assigned to assist Mr. Jones' family at this difficult time.

Around 12:30pm on Saturday, October 18th first responders were dispatched to a reported serious collision involving two motorcycles.
Details are unclear at this time; however it appears that two motorcycles collided on Court Street in the City of Hamilton near the junction with Reid Street. As a result three people were injured and taken to the hospital via ambulance.
