Reported Serious Collision in Warwick

Monday, January 12,2015

Around 5:55pm on Monday, January 12th first responders were dispatched to a report of a serious two vehicle collision involving a car and a motorcycle at the junction of Middle Road and Ord Road in Warwick. Traffic diversions are currently in place at the junction of Middle Road and Longford Road as well as the junction of Middle Road and Keith Hall Road until further notice. Further updates to follow.



Royal Anguilla Police Force Sergeant Joins PMR on Secondment

Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva - I am delighted to welcome Sergeant Chrispen Gumbs of the Royal Anguilla Police Force (RAPF) to the ranks of the Bermuda Police Service – at least for the next two weeks. Sergeant Gumbs has been seconded to the BPS to shadow the Public and Media Relations (PMR) Unit until 23rd January under the leadership of Mr. Dwayne Caines and his staff.



Central Parishes Community Outreach Clinic Today

The Central Community Action Team will be holding a ‘Meet Your CAT Officers’ – Police Community Outreach Clinic at 12 noon to 4pm today at the Empire Grocery on North Shore Road in Devonshire. This initiative is an avenue for members of the public to voice their concerns about ongoing anti-social or criminal activity in their neighborhoods, receive Neighborhood Watch Group information as well as receive Crime Prevention information and pamphlets.



Car Goes Over Embankment on South Road in Southampton

At 4:36am on Saturday 10th January 2015, a male driver reported he was driving his car on South Road by Gulf Stream [formerly Tio Pepe] and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle subsequently veered off the road, over the embankment towards Horseshoe Beach. The male driver was the only person in the vehicle at the time was unhurt, he remained at the scene for police assistance. Police advise caution in that area for all road users.



Reported Missing Person: Henry Smith [Located]

The Bermuda Police Service is appealing for the public's assistance in locating 84 year old Henry Smith, who was apparently last seen around 3pm Thursday, January 8th and subsequently reported missing at 6:45pm that same day. Mr. Smith is described as brown complexioned, 5'4" tall, with a bald head and moustache.



BPS Grassroots Social Media Campaign: #drivesafelybdansavealife

The Bermuda Police Service Public and Media Relations Department is starting a spontaneous grassroots social media campaign entitled “#drivesafelybdansavealife”. During the past few weeks we have seen an increase in road traffic collisions and the goal of this grassroots social media campaign is to start dialogue between road users and highlight the importance of “#drivesafelybdansavealife”.



Limited Edition Police History Book Released

As the final component of celebrations in 2014 recognizing the 135th anniversary of the founding of the Bermuda Police Service, the Service is pleased to announce the pre-publication of a definitive book tracing the history of policing in our island home. Beginning with the first reference to Constables in Bermuda, during the second Assizes in St. George’s in 1620, the book traces the early years of policing leading up to the establishment of the Bermuda Police Force in 1879 and beyond.



14th Road Traffic Fatality

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 23 year old Shawn Williams of Paget and extends condolences to his family and friends.  Mr. Williams was seriously injured in a road traffic collision on Paynter’s Road near the junction with Harrington Sound Road in Hamilton Parish at 1:33am on Sunday. It appears that he was riding his motorcycle east along Paynter’s Road when he lost control of his cycle and hit a tree. Following the collision Shawn was admitted into the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, where he remained until his passing a few hours later.



Police Impacted by a Spam E-mail

The Bermuda Police Service has been impacted by a spam E-mail message bearing the title: “Your documen” . The email contains a zip file that, if opened, will replicate the email and send it out to every contact in the recipients directory. The BPS advises the public that the email has also been reported at other locations outside of the police service. If you receive this email, do not open the attachment and delete as soon as possible.



Police Service Donates Christmas Hampers to Local Charities

During this Christmas Season the Bermuda Police Service – Community Action Teams developed an initiative entitle “Be a Part of a Miracle” that’s aim is to assist families during the Christmas season that are experiencing challenging circumstances. This initiative was done in partnership with the Bermuda Police Service’s 2014 selected charities The Women’s Resource Centre and Big Brothers and Big Sisters Bermuda.



Advisory: Counterfeit Bermuda $50 Notes Circulating

The Bermuda Police Service has noticed an increase in the number of counterfeit Bermuda $50 notes being reported to police recently. The most recent is A1498951. With the holiday season upon us, businesses are asked to remind their staff to be especially vigilant when accepting larger denominations, in particular the old style Bermuda notes.



Reported Missing Person: Zina Darrell [Located]

The Bermuda Police Service is appealing for the public's assistance in locating 51 year old Zina Darrell. She is described as light brown complexioned, 5'7" tall weighing around 150 pounds, with curly black hair. Last seen wearing blue leggings and a light coloured top.



Man Arrested for Igniting Firecrackers Illegally

Police can confirm that a 51 year old guest worker is now in police custody as a result of igniting firecrackers in St. George's in the early hours of Friday and  Saturday. A court appearance is expected in the near future.



Two Confirmed Firearm Incidents Overnight: No Reported Injuries

Police responded to a report of a confirmed firearm incident that took place at 11:15pm on Tuesday night. Details are sketchy but it appears that suspects were riding separate motorcycles in the area of Scenic Heights Pass, Southampton when a firearm was discharged. Both cycles then left the area one travelling south on Scenic Heights Pass and the other travelling north. At this juncture it does not appear that anyone was injured in this incident.



Clarification: Peter Woolcock Road Fatality

The Bermuda Police Service would like to take this opportunity to clarify the circumstances regarding the death of 88 year old Peter Woolcock. It was initially reported that pedestrian Mr. Woolcock was struck by a car on Par-La-Ville Road in Pembroke around 10am Thursday, December 4th in the vicinity of the Royal Gazette offices.



Fatal Shooting of Prince Barrington Edness, Sunday 7th December 2014

Acting Commissioner of Police Paul Wright - Last night a very courageous police officer driving a marked police (Jeep) patrol car was shot at as he gave chase to a motorcycle carrying two suspects fleeing from the scene of a murder in which a self-identified gang member was shot dead. In a few moments you will hear more details on that murder from Acting Assistant Commissioner Howard.



29 Year Old Man Fatally Shot in Southampton

The Bermuda Police Service responded to a report of a firearm incident that took place at 8:30pm Sunday, December 7th on South Avenue in the Sunnyside Park area of Southampton. Upon police arrival it was ascertained that a 29 year old Pembroke man was shot and subsequently died as a result of his injuries. A full investigation into this incident has commenced. As this investigation is in its infancy no further information will be given until tomorrow Monday, December 8th when senior investigators will give a full update to the media.



Bermudian Detained by Canadian Authorities Expected in Court

The Bermuda Police Service continues to liaise with Canadian authorities after several passengers on a scheduled WestJet flight to Bermuda Sunday were detained by Canadian law enforcement officers in Toronto. It is anticipated that a Bermudian will be charged in connection with the November 30th matter, while another Bermudian arrested in a similar incident a week prior has already appeared before the Canadian courts.



Thirteenth Road Fatality for 2014

An 88 year old male pedestrian struck by a car around 10am today, Thursday December 4th in the Par-La-Ville Road, Serpentine Road Pembroke area has since died. Following the collision the Pembroke man was initially admitted into the hospital in stable condition. However, he was subsequently pronounced dead at 2:47pm.



Confirmed Firearm Incident in Warwick: No Reported Injuries

The Bermuda Police Service responded to a report of a confirmed firearm incident that took place at around 5:30 pm in the area of Cedar Hill in Warwick and Tribe Road No. 6. It appears that two males were traveling on a motorcycle when they discharged a firearm at a residence in the area. No one was injured and the two men then left on the motorcycle.
