Four Men Injured in Two Vehicle St. John’s Road Collision [Updated]

Around 7:50pm Tuesday, October 17th police and first responders were dispatched to‎ a reported two vehicle collision on St. John's Road in Pembroke near the junction with Tatems Hill involving a truck and a car. The truck driver, believed to be a 41 year old man, was injured as well as the car driver, believed to be a 21 year old man and his passengers, believed to be two 22 year old men.



Sudden Death of Mr. Stephen Proctor

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 67 year old Stephen Proctor. Mr. Proctor fell overboard off a cliff on North Shore Road, Pembroke near the junction with Berkeley Road around 11:45am today (October 17th). ‎Despite CPR at the scene and during transport via ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, he was later pronounced dead.



Man Dies After Fall from North Shore Road, Pembroke Cliff [Updated]

Around 11:45am Tuesday, October 17th police and first responders were dispatched to a report of a man that fell overboard off a cliff on North Shore Road near the junction with Berkeley Road in Pembroke. ‎The man, believed to be in his 60s from Sandys parish, was retrieved from the water in an unresponsive state and given CPR which continued as he was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance. However sadly, the man was later pronounced dead.



Motorcyclist Injured in Pembroke Collision [Updated]

Around 12:10am Saturday, October 14th police and first responders were dispatched to a reported collision at the junction of Elliot Street and Union Street in the City of Hamilton. Initial information suggests that a motorcycle and a car were involved and the rider, believed to be a 30 year old Pembroke man, may have sustained serious injuries.



Investigation Regarding Sudden Death of Mr. Wilfred DeGraff

The Bermuda Police Service is investigating the sudden death of Mr. Wilfred DeGraff, 42 years old, of St. George’s Parish. Mr. DeGraff was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital on Friday 6th October 2017, and subsequently passed away. An autopsy has been performed and the results are anticipated by the Police Service. Enquiries continue regarding the circumstances of Mr. DeGraff’s death and a Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to assist the deceased's family.



Two Injured in Shooting Outside Southampton Rangers Sports Club [Updated]

Police responded to a report of a firearms incident that took place outside of the Southampton Rangers Sports Club at 8:32pm on Friday. Details are still emerging but it appears that a male on a motorcycle rode into the parking area of the club and discharged a firearm. As a result two individuals, a male and female were shot.  Both victims were transported to the hospital where they are being treated for injures that do not appear to be life threatening.



Police Acknowledge Recent Supreme Court Sentencings

Detective Chief Inspector Na’imah Astwood (Serious Crime Department) – The Supreme Court of Bermuda recently delivered lengthy prison sentences for defendants convicted of murder, possession/use of a firearm and aggravated burglary in three separate cases. On Wednesday (October 4th) Garriko Benjamin was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for using a firearm in the double murder of Haile Outerbridge and Ricco Furbert that occurred on 23rd January 2013.



Special Performance Tonight: Halton Regional Police Pipes & Drums

This evening (Wednesday, 4th October 2017) on the front courtyard of City Hall starting at 6:30pm, there will be a joint performance by the Halton Regional Police Pipes and Drums (Ontario, Canada), and the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band and Highland Dancers (BIPB). The performance is expected to last about an hour. HRPP&D are in Bermuda as guests of the Bermuda Police Service to support Police Week 2017 activities.



Recruit Matthew McGowan Removed From Duty With Immediate Effect

Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Antoine Daniels - Matthew McGowan has been employed as an unsworn student officer on a recruit foundation course at the police training center since 11 September 2017. He was previously employed as a teacher at a private school in England. Information has come to light that a professional conduct panel in England has prohibited him from teaching indefinitely after it found allegations to be proven that he behaved inappropriately with a former female student. Mr. McGowan has been given 28 days in which to appeal the decision.



12 BPS Officers Volunteer for Duty in the British Virgin Islands

On 17th September 2017, six officers from the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) were deployed to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) to provide armed support to the policing operation there following Hurricanes Irma & Maria. The BPS team comprises of Sergeant A. Smalling and Constables I. Freeman, S. Millar, P. Lewington, C. Regan and S. Monk. The officers have been sworn in as special constables with the Royal British Virgin Islands Police Force and are now assisting local police, in partnership with the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service and U.K. troops.



BPS Statement Regarding Recruit Linked to UK News Report [Updated]

Acting Commissioner of Police Paul Wright - One of the fourteen new Bermuda Police Service recruits who commenced a Recruit Foundation Course on Monday 11 September 2017 has been linked to a news report in the U.K. that was published on Thursday 28 September 2017. The news report refers to allegations that the officer was engaged in inappropriate behavior with a sixteen year old student at a private school where he was previously employed as a teacher. The matter was investigated by the police in the U.K which found that there was no criminal case to answer. However, the National College for Teaching and Leadership convened a professional conduct panel which recorded its decision on 7th September 2017 that on balance, the allegations that he developed an inappropriate relationship with the student were proven.



Eleventh Road Fatality for 2017: Kerry Petty

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 38 year old Kerry Petty and extends sincere condolences to her family and friends. Ms. Petty was seriously injured when the motorcycle she was riding was involved in a collision with a car on Middle Road, Southampton in the area of Five Star Island around 5:48am this morning (September 28th). She was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance but sadly, later pronounced dead.

Sailboat & Ferry Collide Near Dockyard: No Reported Injuries [Updated]

Marine police responded to a reported maritime collision Friday night (September 8th) involving the sailing vessel ‘Spirit of Bermuda’ and the Government ferry ‘Resolute’ in waters near Dockyard. There are no reported injuries at this time and the extent of any damage to either vessel is currently unclear. Civilian watercraft came to the assistance of both vessels involved, transporting passengers safely ashore.



Department of Corrections Crowned King of the Grill at Charity Event

Constable Kimberley Spring – On Saturday 2nd September 2017, the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) hosted the first ever Inter-Service BBQ Challenge, titled “King of the Grill,” at the Police Recreation Club in Prospect. Six government agencies took part in the historic challenge which was attended by over 300 guests, including H.E. the Governor Mr. John Rankin and U.S. Consul General Mrs. Mary Ellen Koenig.

Advisory: Rental Accommodation Online Scam

The Bermuda Police Service would like to remind members of the public to be vigilant when making any purchases using the internet. A recent reported scam involved a fake rental accommodation advertisement posted on a local online classifieds site. The alleged contact person for the fraudulent posting, a ‘Dr. Jonathan Moore’, claimed that two month’s rent plus security deposit for the apartment should be sent via wire transfer to a specific overseas account.

Commissioner of Police Michael A. DeSilva - The Bermuda Police Service acknowledges the findings in the independent report of the Police Complaints Authority. We accept the determination that police officers did not act negligently or with misconduct is an appropriate finding based on the evidence, much of which was seen and circulated in the public domain. In terms of the views expressed about the mistakes made by senior police commanders, most of this was thoroughly covered in the NPoCC report earlier this year and therefore does not come as a surprise.



Post Cup Match Press Release

Speaking notes of Superintendent Darrin Simons The Bermuda Police report a very active Cup Match holiday period that commenced on Wednesday evening August 2nd and concluded on Sunday August 6th at 3am.  During that period of time there were at least 10 major events including Cup Match. On the Friday of Cup Match it is reported that close to 10,000 people were in attendance.  Over the five-day period, 55 persons were arrested and a number of those individuals appeared in Magistrates Court this morning. Two persons were also arrested and placed before the courts this morning as a result of a robbery that took place on Friday the 4th of August. A further two people were arrested and bailed in relation to the stabbing that took place on Wednesday afternoon on Queen Street.



Cup Match Policing Plan 2017

Cup Match Comments from Superintendent Darrin Simons The annual Cup Match holiday is a significant time in Bermuda. It provides the opportunity as a community to come together to celebrate our heritage and enjoy the festive spirit. Traditionally the majority of Bermuda’s residents focus on the actual two days of cricket. However from a policing perspective the BPS has implemented a comprehensive policing plan which runs between Wednesday August 2nd through to Sunday 6th August 2017.  During that period there will be approximately 20 events taking place on both land and sea. Some of these events will attract crowds of people numbering in the thousands.
