Commissioner, Minister of National Security: No Murders In 2019 Joint Statement

Thursday, January 23,2020

Stephen Corbishley, The Commissioner of Police, today advised that 2019 was the first time in over 20 years that no homicides were recorded in Bermuda, with the belief that this position could actually be even longer subject to examination of archive crime records. Commissioner Corbishley stated:  "2019 saw tremendous work by the BPS and the Government’s Anti-Gang Task Force in preventing the risk of serious violence, particularly in regards to gun crime, across the island. Last year not one life was lost through homicide which is testament to those involved in protecting the public and dealing with small parts of our community who choose to be involved in gang related crime. Additionally, we recorded just 2 firearms related injuries and whilst this is still extremely serious, it pales against the recording of 28 firearms related injuries 10 years ago. However, tackling this problem is complex and involves significant resources to intervene in tensions and ensure we prevent the supply and use of guns and other weapons. Additionally, we see increasing numbers of young men want to turn away from crime and there is excellent support from Pastor Bean and others to assist them. But last year’s position cannot leave to complacency and whilst it is an excellent achievement, the same, if not more effort, needs to continue in order to prevent the senseless loss of any life and instead create pathways for young men involved in gangs, drug dealing and other forms of crime to redirect their lives. The key for this is to continue a strong partnership between Government, Police and local communities."
