New Year's Events
Detective Superintendent Sherwin Joseph, Officer in Charge of the Crime Division - "The Bermuda Police Service wish to thank the public for their co-operation and assistance in ensuring the Christmas Holiday weekend was free of any major incidents or criminal activity.
As we approach the New Year’s Holiday weekend, we are asking that you continue to work with us to ensure a continued safe and enjoyable festive season.
For our part, we will maintain a high-profile police presence as we provide public reassurance and work to deter criminal activity and anti-social behaviour. We are well prepared to respond to and deal with calls for assistance by members of the public, to incidents of crime or disorder.
To that end, there will be increased traffic enforcement with officers adopting a zero-tolerance approach to road traffic offences, particularly those involving impaired driving.
During this period, licensed premises and private venues throughout the island will hold New Year’s Eve theme parties and events. In keeping with tradition, those in attendance may engage in having a few drinks to celebrate.
Please be reminded that Roadside Sobriety Checkpoints are in place having commenced on 24 December 2024, through to Thursday 2nd January 2025. We urge you to make the necessary arrangements to ensure that you return home safely, if you plan on consuming alcohol while out celebrating. As we’ve often stated, the life you save could well be your own.
Additionally, driving after using any mind-altering substance, is considered impaired driving. Do not operate any vehicle if you have used any drugs, prescription or otherwise, that may alter your mental state.
The Corporation of St. George will host their annual ‘Dropping of the Onion’ event at King’s Square in the Olde Towne on Tuesday 31st December 2024.
The Bermuda Football Association will host the Shield and Friendship Cup Finals at Somerset Cricket Club on Wednesday 1st January 2025. The Shield Final will kick off at 12:00 noon followed by the Friendship Final at 2:00 p.m.
If you intend on attending any or all of these planned events, please be aware that there will be a heightened police presence to ensure safe enjoyment for members of the public.
You can expect there will be traffic checkpoints in operation where officers will be exercising their powers of search under various sections of law, should there be grounds to do so. We ask that you co-operate with the officers at these particular locations and follow their instructions should you be stopped.
Our intention is to maintain order and provide reassurance to the public while as you celebrate the coming New Year. We would much prefer there is compliance by members of the public rather than our officers having to exercise their powers of arrest and and/or charge anyone with criminal offences.
However, when and where required, we will decisively address any acts of criminality or anti-social behaviour.
We wish to take this opportunity to wish all residents of Bermuda a happy, healthy, safe, prosperous 2025 and we look forward to continuing to partner with you as we all work to make Bermuda safer."

Prioritise Safety: Selling or Buying Items Online Involving Unknown Persons
The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) is urging residents to prioritise their safety, if intending to meet up with any unknown individual, to buy or sell items advertised online.
Three reports have been received between the 24th and 26th December 2024, where an unknown individual stole an item offered for sale on Facebook Marketplace, after meeting unsuspecting sellers at three separate prearranged locations.
The stolen items included popular brand name electronics. Inquiries are ongoing regarding all of these matters, with the possibility some instances may be linked.
Noting the popularity of Facebook Marketplace and other similar online commerce sites, the following proactive advice is strongly recommended.
Safety First
View the buyer or seller profile. Take a screenshot of it, if possible and take note of the profile’s web address (URL). Check how long the profile has been active, when it was created and how many friends the account has.
Be wary of newly created profiles that only have a few friends, or no friends at all. Also, be suspicious of promoted accounts that have testimonials from recently created profiles.
Ask for a phone number and speak to the person before meeting.
Never go alone. Bring a relative or friend along and let other family members or friends know where and when the exchange is taking place.
Meet in well-lit, public areas before the hours of darkness. Avoid inviting an unknown individual to your home.
Take note of the vehicle used by the buyer or seller, including the colour, type and its licence plate. Report any suspicious activity to the police immediately by calling 211, or 911 in an emergency.
Online reports can also be made via the BPS community portal, https://portal.police.bm.

BPS Festive Season Advisory
The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) recognises that during this festive season, including the upcoming holiday period, an increase in social and commercial activity takes place.
Unfortunately, an uptick in criminality and anti-social behaviour tends to occur as well.
Accordingly, to deter opportunistic crime and provide public reassurance, residents can expect proactive police patrols across the island into the New Year.
The BPS is also prepared to appropriately address any anti-social behaviour that may occur and will use all lawful powers to deter and detect offenders, as necessary.
Going Out? Secure Your Home, Be Mindful When Shopping & Socialising
Always lock doors and windows when leaving home, even for a few minutes. If leaving home for an extended period of time, ask a neighbour or family member to watch the house. Displays of holiday gifts should not be seen through windows or doors.
Members of our community are asked to remain alert when out shopping, particularly if late night shopping. Do not buy more than you can carry. Plan ahead by going with a friend, or ask a store employee to help carry your packages to your vehicle. Do not leave any packages visible inside the vehicle. Avoid travelling alone through isolated areas and only park in well-lit locations, if possible.
Patrons attending Christmas and New Year’s parties are encouraged to enjoy themselves responsibly. Don’t leave drinks unattended and do not accept drinks from unknown individuals. Avoid giving rides to and taking rides from unknown persons.

Outcome of Investigation into ACOP Weekes
Deputy Commissioner of Police Na'imah Astwood - "Following an independent investigation into allegations of Gross Misconduct on the part of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACOP), Martin Weekes, it has been determined there is no case to answer.
However an allegation of discreditable conduct arising from the same matter was re-assessed, with the outcome being Management Advice, in accordance with Order 18 (5b) of the Police Conduct Orders 2016.
The allegations arose from a personal WhatsApp conversation, which took place in 2018, between ACOP Weekes and a former BPS officer. This conversation, which was referenced in a Court of Appeal in its judgment, was later brought to the attention of the Commissioner of Police.
The investigation was conducted by a ranking officer from a United Kingdom police force.
ACOP Weekes is scheduled to resume the role of ACOP Operations on December 23, 2024.
As a delegated Appropriate Authority in the Bermuda Police Service, I do not typically provide detailed outcomes for such matters.
However, given the rank of ACOP Weekes, the public attention this matter has garnered and in the interest of transparency, this outcome has been shared."

Scam Advisory: Compromised WhatsApp Accounts Used for Fraud
The Bermuda Police Service is advising the public to exercise increased caution in the wake of reports of people’s WhatsApp accounts being compromised and used to perpetrate fraudulent financial schemes.
Hackers reportedly gain unauthorized access to an individual's WhatsApp account by deceiving the user into disclosing their six-digit verification code. Having gained access, the hackers impersonate the victim and message that person’s contacts, requesting urgent financial assistance or, sensitive information.
What to Look Out For:
Unusual Messages from Friends or Family: If a contact messages you asking for financial assistance, verify their identity through a phone call or in-person conversation before taking any action.
Requests for OTP or Verification Codes: It is imperative that you do not disclose your one-time password (OTP) or verification codes to any individual, regardless of whether the request appears to originate from a reputable source.
Urgency and Pressure: Fraudsters frequently instill a sense of urgency in order to compel victims to act without considering the consequences.
Protect Yourself:
Enable two-step verification. Enable WhatsApp's two-step verification for an added degree of protection. This feature requires a PIN to access your account.
Avoid Sharing Personal Information: Be cautious when sharing personal or account-related information, even with trusted contacts.
Stay Informed: Regularly update yourself on cybersecurity best practices to recognize and avoid scams.
What to do if you are a victim:
Immediately inform your contacts via alternative means of the hack to prevent further exploitation.
Report the incident to WhatsApp via the in-app help feature.
File a report with the Bermuda Police Service at https://portal.police.bm.
The Bermuda Police Service remains committed to raising awareness about digital safety and encourages everyone to remain vigilant. By working together, we can reduce the impact of these fraudulent activities on our communities.

Renewed Fraud Advisory: Calls From Fake Bank Representatives
The Financial Crime Unit (FCU) has received several reports this week regarding a troubling rise in fraudulent activity targeting both local businesses and members of the public—particularly customers of financial institutions (Banks).
In these incidents, individuals impersonating agents of local banks (from the Fraud Department) are contacting customers and falsely claiming that fraudulent activity has been detected on their accounts.
The fraudsters then request login credentials to "resolve" the issue. Once they gain access to the accounts, they quickly transfer funds to overseas locations.
So far, complaints from this week alone have revealed that local residents have collectively lost over 1.2 million dollars due to this scam.
As we enter the festive season, a time historically associated with increased fraud activity, the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) urges residents to remain vigilant and note the following to protect against falling victim to these types of scams:
1. Bank representatives will never ask you over the phone for your personal account login credentials.
2. If you are uncertain about the legitimacy of a call, hang up immediately and contact your bank directly by phone or in person.
3. Do not download or install any third-party software at the request of someone claiming to be a bank representative.
4. If you receive an email claiming to be from your bank, you should check the email header to see if it matches the details of legitimate emails you've received from your bank before.
The BPS is also aware that persons are receiving WhatsApp messages from friends in their phone contacts list, asking them to send money to a disclosed location. However once contacted the person supposedly making the request confirms they did not send any such message.
We urge residents to please be vigilant of this and if in doubt or, if something seems strange about the request, do not send money.
