Formal Complaints Required to Investigate Sexual Abuse Allegations

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) is aware of recent allegations circulating on social media about instances of alleged past or current inappropriate sexual behaviour.

Members of the public are reminded that formal complaints are required by law in order for the police to investigate such allegations. Online statements and social media posts do not qualify as formal complaints.

We appreciate that this is a sensitive subject and that witnesses and victims are sometimes reluctant to come forward.

Complainants can be assured that they will be treated with dignity and that their investigation will be conducted in strict confidence.

The BPS works closely with the Department of Child & Family Services on these matters and we take such allegations seriously.

But we continue to caution members of the public about making unsubstantiated statements or circulating rumours on social media that may constitute slander or libel.

Please contact Acting Detective Chief Inspector Kenten Trott of the Serious Crime Unit on 247-1739, 717-2345 or e-mail ktrott1@bps.bm.

Alternatively, the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477 can be used to make a report, as well as their website www.crimestoppers.bm.

All incidents are under investigation. Police are appealing to members of the public who have witnessed these incidents or may have information pertaining to them to contact their respective Police Station, Police Headquarters at 295-0011 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1 (800) 623-8477.
