Second Group Meeting Held With Management of Liquor Licenced Premises

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) recently held a meeting 2pm Monday, 6th May 2019 with the management of liquor licenced premises at the Police Recreation Club in Prospect, Devonshire – with invitations sent in advance to the relevant sports clubs for their attendance and input.

Approximately 35 persons attended – including representatives from sports clubs throughout the island as well as restaurant and bar establishments.

BPS representatives consisted of Acting Assistant Commissioner James Howard, Chief Inspectors Jerome Laws, Hashim Estwick and Tracy Adams as well as the Liquor Licence Officer, Sergeant Andrew Exell.

The agenda and topics of discussion were:

Liquor License Act Section 51A and the authority for police to close a premises for 24 hours.

The Liquor Licence Act as it pertains to Members’ Clubs.

Gang Violence and the role Members’ Clubs can play to reduce violence occurring at their premises.

Drug use and underage drinking at licensed premises.

Police expectations of licensed premises.

Working together and in partnership with the BPS to achieve effective, visible and professional security at establishments.

Discussion on forming a “Club Watch” group to keep the various licenced premises informed.

The gathering was a productive one – and in addition to the two group meetings and individual meetings already held with licensed premises, the BPS Liquor Licence Officer continues to be available to liaise with the management of any liquor licenced premises as necessary, in an effort to address any concerns and ultimately create a safe environment for patrons.

All incidents are under investigation. Police are appealing to members of the public who have witnessed these incidents or may have information pertaining to them to contact their respective Police Station, Police Headquarters at 295-0011 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1 (800) 623-8477.
