Commissioner Responds to Media Queries: Sexual Harassment in the BPS

A local media outlet has today asked us some questions about sexual harassment in the Bermuda Police Service. This issue is so important to the Commissioner and Senior Commanders that we are posting our full response to ensure our commitment to dealing firmly with all issues of discrimination is recorded clearly.

Reply to question:

"The Bermuda Police Service is committed to promoting a workplace that is free of all forms of harassment and, like most organisations, we have very strict policies in place to deal with any complaints. The Commissioner and his team take these issues seriously and are committed to take action against any offenders where there is evidence to support a case. All Bermuda Police Service staff should be assured that there is no room in the police service for anyone who is guilty of harassment, bullying or discrimination.

An internal staff survey was conducted in the Bermuda Police Service for police officers and support staff to gauge employee satisfaction across a wide spectrum of workplace issues. Specific questions were asked about all forms of harassment in order to get to the root of any issues in those areas. The goal is to continue developing an effective and productive workforce that is skilled and motivated. A large part of that involves taking care of health and welfare needs, and that includes continuing to educate staff on issues of diversity, respect and dignity and to challenge all forms of harassment or discrimination in the Bermuda Police Service."

All incidents are under investigation. Police are appealing to members of the public who have witnessed these incidents or may have information pertaining to them to contact their respective Police Station, Police Headquarters at 295-0011 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1 (800) 623-8477.
