THURSDAY MORNING UPDATE: Severe Weather

From the Government Department of Communication & Information (DCI) - Causeway remains closed - This morning, the Bermuda Weather Service (BWS) reminded that the Island continues to experience severe and unsettled weather conditions.

This has resulted in the Island being buffeted over night by hurricane force winds greater than 50 knots.

In the in the interest of public safety, a decision was made late yesterday by the Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) to close the bridge.

At this stage the Causeway Bridge remains closed and the closure is extended to 12.00 noon. An assessment of the Causeway will be made at 10.30 a.m. with a view of it being opened shortly thereafter.

It continues to be closely monitored by the Bermuda Police Service and the Ministry of Works and Engineering.

As a note, ALL Government offices are open for business today as normal. As a result of the weather conditions, public transportation services have experienced delays. Bus routes are currently being assessed and it is anticipated that bus service will commence within the hour. Additionally the Ministry of Environment and Sport advised that the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo will be closed until 12.00 noon.

It is anticipated that the storm force winds will subside around midday today.

And as an additional public safety note, the Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Housing, Sen. the Hon. Lt. Col. David Burch urged all motorists to use “extreme caution” when travelling about the Island this morning.

The public will be updated as it relates to any further developments, particularly as it relates to the reopening of the Causeway Bridge.
