UPDATE: Severe Weather

From the Government Department of Communication & Information (DCI) - Causeway to close - The Bermuda Weather Service advises (BWS) that the Island continues to experience severe and unsettled weather conditions, which will remain in effect over the course of this evening and Thursday.

According to the BWS it is anticipated that during the early hours of Thursday morning winds are expected to reach over 50 knots.

Late this afternoon, and in the in the interest of public safety, a decision was made by the Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) to close the Causeway Bridge from midnight (tonight) until 9.00 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday) morning.

During this time, the Causeway will be closely monitored by the Bermuda Police Service and the Ministry of Works and Engineering.

It is important to note that ALL Government offices will be open for business on tomorrow (Thursday) morning.

It is anticipated that the storm force winds, which will reach gusts of hurricane force, will subside around midday on Thursday.

As a final note, the Waste Management Section of the Ministry of Works and Engineering is advising East End residents who receive garbage and recycling collection tomorrow (Thursday) not to place bags out this evening. Inclement weather may delay collection services tomorrow – therefore the public should keep their bags and bins of waste in a dry wind free area and not place them out for curb-side collection. Residents scheduled for bulky waste collections tomorrow are also requested to keep waste inside until notified.

An advisory will be release early tomorrow morning indicating whether normal collections will proceed.

The public will be updated as it relates to any further weather related developments. To get the latest weather updates and advisories this weekend the public is encouraged to visit www.weather.bm, www.emo.gov.bm or watch the local weather station on CableVision channel 4 or WOW channel 100.
