During 2006 the number of collisions reported to Police has decreased by 3.3% to 2,839 compared to 2005's total of 2,934. This also reflects a decrease over 2004's figure of 3,078.
There were 947 injury collisions reported, lower than 2005's figure of 999 and 2004's figure of 1,084. As a result 1,092 persons were injured, 747 locals were slightly 172 seriously, 153 tourists slightly and 20 seriously injured.
A total of 4,813 locals and 232 tourists were involved in collisions in 2006 compared to 2005's totals of 4,948 and 243 respectively. There were 553 single vehicle collisions, the highest proportion of which were 210 four wheeled vehicles.
Police attended the scene of 111 collisions where drink or drugs were suspected as being the cause, 3.9% of the total number of collisions reported, 113 arrests were made on suspicion of impaired driving.
There were 14 road fatalities during 2006, compared to 13 in 2005. The 14 road fatalities are included in the above 947 injury collisions.
