Death of Matthew Charles Clarke – Press Conference
Detective Chief Inspector Antoine Daniels, Officer in Charge of the Serious & Organized Crime Unit
At 3:41pm yesterday (Wednesday 9, April 2008) Police responded to a 911 call at a North Shore Road, Pembroke residence. On arrival Police & Ambulance personnel found 31 year old Matthew Charles Clarke inside the residence in an unresponsive condition. Efforts to revive Mr. Clarke proved unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at 4:02pm by a medical practitioner. Next of kin have been notified; the Bermuda Police Service wishes to again extend condolences to the family and friends of the late Matthew Clarke.
Police are awaiting the arrival of a forensic pathologist from Toronto, Canada to conduct an autopsy on the victim, before the exact cause of death can be established. An initial medical examination of the deceased suggests there are a number of injuries on the deceased’s body, believed to have been inflicted by the person or persons responsible.
I am leading this investigation and I am being assisted by Detective Inspector Robert Cardwell, along with a team of 10 detectives. Overseas forensic experts are continuously being consulted for advice regarding the crime scene in addition to other critical aspects of this murder investigation.
Presently, there is a 32 year-old man in custody assisting Police with their investigations into this matter.
