Lottery Scam

The Bermuda Police Service Fraud Unit is aware of a new lottery scam that is currently in circulation around the island. The letter, which appears to be from a European country, claims that the recipient has won a cash prize and must provide personal information (including copies of a passport and/or driver's license) as well as banking details in order to receive their winnings. In addition, the letter suggests that 10% of the money be returned to the company's 'Foreign Operations Manager' for facilitating the transfer of the funds.

So far this week, the Fraud Unit has received over a dozen copies of the deceptive document from concerned local businesses and residents. We would like to advise the public that this correspondence is not legitimate and that individuals/businesses should not reply to these requests for personal or banking information. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is!

For more information, contact the Fraud Unit on 299-4330

All incidents are under investigation. Police are appealing to members of the public who have witnessed these incidents or may have information pertaining to them to contact their respective Police Station, Police Headquarters at 295-0011 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1 (800) 623-8477.
