Update – Shooting Investigations

Superintendent Antoine Daniels - The Bermuda Police Service wish to provide a brief update regarding the status of the investigations into the recent shootings that have plagued our island in recent weeks. Acting Detective Chief Inspector Calvin Smith is heading these investigations and is currently being assisted by a number of detectives.



Fatal Shooting in Pembroke

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 30 year old Shane Minors of Pembroke. Around 6:15am today, Police received a report of an unresponsive male at a South Terrace, Pembroke residence. The victim, a 30 year old Pembroke man, was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. It appears that Mr. Minors died as a result of gunshot wounds sustained sometime between 1am and 1:15am Thursday. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing. The Bermuda Police Service extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Minors. An autopsy is anticipated in due course.

Fatal Shooting in Sandys & Man Injured in Warwick Shooting

Around 10:30pm on Tuesday, Police received a report about a man being shot and injured outside of a private residence in Sandys parish. Officers responded along with an ambulance and EMTs. The victim, a 22 year old Pembroke man, was conveyed to hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The Bermuda Police Service is withholding the identity of the victim until his next of kin have been informed. A Police investigation commenced immediately after the incident and is being led by Acting Detective Chief Inspector Calvin Smith of the Serious Crime Unit. An autopsy will be performed in due course.



Man Sentenced to 13 Years for Firearms, Ammunition & Drugs Importation

26 year old Kershun Dublin of Pembroke was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment on Thursday, December 10th for imporintg four firearms as well as a significant quantity of ammunition and cannabis concealed in a toolbox following a Supreme Court trial. The contraband was brought into the island in April 2008 and seized as a result of a joint Police/H.M. Customs operation.



Missing Crewman from Bermuda Registered Cruise Ship

The Bermuda Police Service received a report of the missing crewman – Mr. Angelo Faliva - on Friday, 27th November 2009. A ‘Missing Person’ Report has been initiated. Mr. Faliva is an Italian who worked on a Bermuda Registered Cruise liner - Coral Princess - as a First Cook. The Cruise liner was sailing from Aruba to Cartagena, Colombia between November 25th and 26th 2009. Mr. Faliva was last seen alive by a worker between 6am and 6:30am that morning as the ship neared Cartagena. This time coincides with a passenger who is believed to have sighted a person in the water at the rear of the ship.



Court Appearance by Former Probationary Constable Relating to Accessing Child Internet Pornography

On 9th November 2009 the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) announced the establishment of a task force within the Vulnerable Persons Unit to conduct investigations into offences relating to child internet pornography. We reported that several persons had been identified including a probationary Police Constable who has now been dismissed from the Service. This morning 41 year old Paul Boorman appeared at Magistrates’ Court charged with 15 counts relating to accessing child pornography. Enquiries into this case and others will continue. The Bermuda Police Service takes the matter very seriously indeed and is committed to taking every opportunity to bring offenders to justice.



Kumi Harford Murder Investigation

Assistant Commissioner of Police Paul Wright - The murder of Kumi Harford in the early morning of Saturday 5 December 2009 as he was driving home represents the 23rd confirmed incident involving firearms so far this year. Gun violence in Bermuda has resulted in 14 people being injured so far this year, tragically two of them suffering fatal wounds.



Update - Fatal Shooting on St. Monica’s Road

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 30 year old Kumi Harford of Pembroke. Mr. Harford was shot and killed in the St. Monica's Mission area of Pembroke around 5am Saturday. The investigation into the fatal shooting is ongoing. A press conference to update the media will take place soon.Local investigators are being assisted by a crime scene examiner and a forensic pathologist from the USA. There continues to be a high profile Police presence in the area with the Police Mobile Command Unit stationed at the scene and Community Action Team officers conducting house to house inquiries.



Fatal Shooting on St. Monica’s Road

Around 5am today, Police received a report of gunshots in the St. Monica’s Mission area of Pembroke. Units responded along with an ambulance and a 30 year old Pembroke man was discovered suffering from gun shot wounds. He was taken to KEMH where he later died as a result of his injuries. No information as to the identity of the victim will be given until the next of kin has been notified.



Response to Media Queries Regarding MV Guardian

The Bermuda Police Service is entering the Police vessel ‘Guardian’ in the 2009 Christmas Boat Parade as we join with the community in celebrating Bermuda’s 400th anniversary and 130 years of policing in Bermuda. In keeping with the theme for this year’s Police Week – ‘Our Youth … Our Commitment’ – the six student winners of the 2009 Police Week schools poster competition will be invited onboard as our special guests.



Seizure of Cannabis Plants

The Eastern Criminal Investigation Unit assisted by the Eastern Community Action Team seized 30 cultivated cannabis plants Tuesday afternoon, which were located on secluded ground adjacent to St. George’s Golf Course.



Response to Media Query Regarding Southside Shooting Investigation

A 28 year old Pembroke man was one of the men arrested in connection with the shooting outside Southside Cinema on Friday, November 13th 2009. He was subsequently released on Police bail. This simply means that at this stage the 28 year old Pembroke man has not been charged with any crime. When an individual is released on Police bail, there are no restrictions on their ability to travel overseas; however they are bound to reappear at a Police Station on a specified date. Travel restrictions can only be made by a judge/magistrate once a suspect has been placed before the court and charged with an offence.



Appointment of Deputy Commissioner of Police & Subsequent Change of Command

The Commissioner of Police is pleased to announce that His Excellency the Governor, Sir Richard Gozney KCMG, has announced the appointment of Assistant Commissioner Michael Jackman as the new Deputy Commissioner of Police with effect from the 16th December, 2009.



Advanced Fee Fraud Advisory

The Bermuda Police Service Financial Crime Unit continues to advise members of the public not to respond to unsolicited correspondence (via e-mail, fax, letter or telephone call) which claims to offer an amazing prize or cash reward – only if the ‘lucky winner’ is willing to send an amount of money first to ‘secure the winnings’ or other ‘promising opportunity.’ In the last week alone, the Financial Crime Unit has received four complaints relating to these ‘advanced fee frauds’ where - 



ECAT Provides Pedal Cycle Lights to St. George’s Youth Group

At 7:30pm on Friday, November 20th three officers from the Bermuda Police Service Eastern Community Action Team (ECAT) met with young people at the St. George’s Community Centre to provide them with pedal cycle lights.



Recovered Camera

The Bermuda Police Service recently recovered a stolen camera. On the camera were specific images; the pictures were taken on a Hannah Montana camera. On the same camera as these images, there are also pictures of children in Harrington Sound Primary School uniform.



New Police Vehicles

The Bermuda Police Service has purchased three 3-wheeled electric cycles for deploying officers in large pedestrian areas and neighbourhoods. The cycles are currently being evaluated by our driving staff, protocols are being finalised and officers are being selected to receive training. Once this has all been completed, a full announcement to the public will be made.



Search Warrant Executed

At 4:50pm on Thursday, the Bermuda Police Service executed a search warrant at an Addendum Lane, Pembroke commercial premises. Due to the nature of the information received armed officers were deployed to assist; however, no arrests were made and nothing liable to seizure was discovered.



Community Safety Workshop

The Bermuda Police Service Crime Prevention Unit will hold a community safety workshop on Saturday, 21st November 2009 from 10am to 12 noon at Southside Police Station in St. David’s. This workshop will provide information on neighbourhood watches, home security and burglary prevention as well as the U-Mark initiative. All are welcome to attend.
